2017 Pennsylvania Super Late Model Power Rankings: Week 19
Hey there folks, it's Monday. so that means some words about super late model racing and stuff. There was some rain around this weekend, but there was still a pretty healthy amount of races that ran, so some points were scored.
Before I go on, I have to admit that I have made an error all season. These rankings are based on every super late model race in the state of Pennsylvania. Super late model means aluminum blocks. There's a track that has been running supers all season, Hummingbird Speedway, that I have failed to score. You see, for years they were a track that was headlined by steel block late models, and I assumed going into the season that's what they'd continue doing. However, I wrong. They started allowing aluminum blocks this season, and I hadn't realized it until earlier today. I went back in and scored all of their races up to this point in the season, and the rankings will reflect that. I will obviously be scoring them weekly from here until the end of the season now. I apologize to anybody I may have offended by omission.
This week saw Jeff Rine extend his already sizable lead on the rest of the field in this poll, with his closest competition, Alex Ferree, remaining idle this weekend due to rain. Coleby Frye went from being the guy that managed to be in the top 5 all season without winning to the guy who has won an back to back weekends. Charlie Powell had a great weekend, going 2 or 2 and picking up a couple spots.
This coming weekend sees a few big races in the state to look forward too. Friday, Dog Hollow is paying 4k to win and Clinton County is paying 5k to win. Saturday, Marion center is paying 5100 to win. Should be some regional heavy hitters at all of them and would make for some entertaining shows. You should pick one and head on out to the races. I personally plan on heading up to Marion Center for the first time in a few years on Saturday.
Now let's get to them rankings.
1. Jeff Rine********, 92 points. Jeff was first under the checkers at Selinsgrove Saturday night.
2. Alex Ferree*******, 74 points. Alex went scoreless this week.
3. Max Blair****, 54 points. Max got the win at Eriez Sunday.
4. Coleby Frye**, 47 points. Coleby took home the first place check at Port Royal Saturday.
5. Charles Powell Jr. ******, 45 points. Charlie got the win friday and Backed it up with another win at Hummingbird Saturday.
6. Dave Hess Jr. ****, 43 points. Dave ran second at Eriez Sunday.
7. Michael Lake******, 41 points. Michael took an 0fer this weekend.
8. Doug Eck**, 38 points. Doug had a pair of thirds this weekend, Thunder Mountain Friday and Eriez Sunday.
9. Dylan Yoder*, 36 points. Dylan went scoreless this week.
9. Matt Cosner**, 36 points. Matt came home third at Port Royal Saturday.
And that's the first ten names on my list of drivers this week. Tune in next Monday to see to get your updates on the weekend's action and see if anything changes.
Feel Free To Complain About Your Dirt Track On Social Media; Nobody's Paying Attention Most Likely
Ah social media, the great mechanism that lets everyone have a voice, such a great and not so great thing. Everyone has an opinion, and a lot of people feel the need to express them no matter how delightful or damning they may be. And though the subject of bad mouthing the sport that we love across all platforms has been beaten to death like a dead horse in recent years, it’s not going away anytime soon. Some tracks play right into it too, with promoters playing right in to the hands of the fans that egg them on. Some tracks make social media policies that border on complete and total censorship of adult human beings. There’s not much in the way of middle ground.
But have you ever thought that instead of lighting up the twitterverse or facebook with another jab at the track officials you disagree with, or the promoter that you feel cancels quick on a 50/50 weather night, or the fact that you’d rather pay $12 weekly instead of $15, like three dollars will actually cause you physical pain, have you ever thought of taking those concerns to the source directly?
Yes, instead of trying to look like a hero to the local fanbase, what if you actually took just a few more seconds and composed an email? Or better yet, why not pick up the phone and actually call the office? Okay, so there’s not always an answer when you call, we’ll get to that in a bit. But let me tell you something, emails and phone calls may earn you much more credibility in the long run, and even more importantly, may help change occur.
It is a free country, thank god for that. You are more than allowed to say what you will, post negative nonsense, and not always with correct spelling or coherent expression for that matter, any time you choose. There’s nothing to stop you , it may even make you feel better. But know this, even in you make those posts and get 150 of your buddies to press the like button, it means exactly nothing at all in the real world. Nothing.
Here’s what happens when you take that route, most of the time. The post goes out to whatever site you put it on. Some overworked promoter, general manager, or PR Director that probably works another 50 hour a week full time job gets to the track and begins on preparations for the show that week. They probably aren’t going to respond, they’ve got tracks to grade, food to stock, and other business matters to tend to just so there can be a show in the first place. Then they get home at an ungodly hour, and perhaps go over any social media websites to check for your post. Here’s a couple of things they do check more diligently, their emails and their phone messages, they have to, because they are getting information they need to run the track.
Race tracks are businesses, you are customers, your expressed concerns via email and phone stand out and take priority. Not your opinion on social media. To be honest, the folks in charge have bigger fish to fry. They know a good many on social media taking jabs might not even have been to their track in years. But they know a fan or driver that took the time to email or call has a legitimate gripe most of the time.
So fans, take time and consideration before you take your track to the woodshed over a petty grievance. It makes your track look bad, and it makes you look like a vengeful idiot to others around you if you persist. Now then, take that energy, and turn it into a win, a retweet of a promotional night, a facebook share of a feature video from last week’s show, do something to help promote your track to your friends on social media. If all they see you do is bad mouth the place, you can rest assured, they won’t make an effort to go with you which equals one less potential fan in the stands. Does you track need less fans, or more?
Promoters, you have a hand in this too. If the smart folks who have taken the aforementioned advice have taken to email or phone, or better yet a personal meeting at the track (best way to go actually), to tell you their concerns, you need to respond. If you’re too busy, simply reply that you don’t have time this second to help them, but will reach out to them later on. And then, listen to what they have to say, and help them as best you can. Do that enough times, and watch the negative repping on social media become less and less.
The Story From Sharon; Schneider and McGuire Rule Pro Stocks; King Jr. Bests Big Blocks; Wolbert Wires RUSH Mods; Haefke Wins Thriller
![]() |
Hartford, OH (July 29,2017) Outstanding weather and a pit area jam packed with 109 cars greeted fans on Saturday night at Sharon Speedway as the weekly Steel Valley Thunder series returned to action following a lengthy layoff. And once everyone got settled into their seats, they were kept on the edge of them as five action packed features gave everyone in attendance reasons to cheer, grimace and partake in their favorite nervous habits.
Chris Schneider schooled the visiting Homak Penn-Ohio Pro Stocks in their make up show which dated back to September of 2016 while the scheduled touring event honors went to Chris McGuire. In the Big Block Modifieds, Rex King Jr. captured his second feature win of the season, overcoming a strong running Garrett Krummert in the process. Chas Wolbert was the class of the field in the RUSH Sportsman Modifieds while Steve Haefke came from downtown to score his fourth victory in a row in Economod action.
Schneider Puts On Clinic En Route to $2,000 Victory
Chris Schneider might have swept the fields in both Penn-Ohio feature events on Saturday night, had it not been for a flat tire in feature one. The veteran pilot was one of the fastest cars of the night and put on a clinic in the $2,000 to win make up feature, coming from the 11th starting spot with precision and purpose.
Brian Carothers and Andy Buckley started out on the front row and Buckley put his car in front from the drop of the green flag. Buckley looked to be in command early on while Randy Wyant and Rusty Moore took up positions directly behind the leader as Carothers began to fall back to the mid pack. Buckley looked strong out front in the opening portion of the race and began to encounter lapped traffic at the 10 lap mark while Wyant looked for his opportunity to take advantage of Buckley maneuvering around the lappers.
Meanwhile, Schneider had been making steady and smooth progress through the field, using all three grooves on the racy surface. Wyant began taking looks underneath Buckley for the lead while at the same time, Schneider was making his move around him. Schneider made his way around Wyant with nine laps to go and for the next three laps there was a blanket over the top three running cars.
Schneider emerged from the trio with the lead passing Wyant and Buckley at the 20 lap mark and never looked back, capping a masterful performance which fans had been accustomed to seeing from him over the years, one that has become synonymous with big money races. Paul Davis rounded out the podium after a solid performance.
"I have to thank these guys for such a nice racetrack," Schneider said. "I've got a lot of experience on this red clay, it's similar to what Lernerville has, It's tricky, you have to learn where to go, where the grip is and where it's not. It's been a rough year, I rolled the car here and we had a motor issue and there's been a lot of rain outs but his is the one I wanted to win."

King Jr. Cruises To Second Win
Rex King Jr. proved to be too much for the field on hand to handle in the 25 lap Big Block Modified feature as he notched his second feature victory of the season and extended his point lead on Saturday night.
Garrett Krummert and Dave Murdick brought the field to the green flag and early on, Krummert looked as if he had the car to beat, taking the early lead. It took just two laps for King to make his way around Dave Murdick for the second spot and once around he found himself immediately on Krummert's rear bumper. However, Krummert would throw the kitchen sink at the current track champion as King took looks underneath for the lead while Krummert slammed the door in the early portion of the race. The two would race side by side with Krummert holding a slight advantage as the halfway point of the race approached.
King was able to make his way underneath in turns three and four on lap nine, but before he could put separation between himself and the field, the caution flag came out with 12 laps down as King was just about to enter heavy lapped traffic. King elected the outside on the restart and when action resumed he pulled away while behind him, Jim Weller Jr. began to apply pressure to Krummert for the second spot. Krummert slammed the door once again and put distance between himself and Weller in the waning laps but was not able shave distance from King's lead out front as he cruised to a comfortable victory.
“I have to thank Sharon Speedway," King remarked in victory lane. " It’s a great facility and was a good race track tonight. I have to thank my sponsors, also everyone on my end for donating to Guy Griffin. Guy is a hell of a person and we hope the best for him.”

Wolbert Wires RUSH Sportsman Modifieds
Chas Wolbert left no doubt as to who had the fastest car on Saturday night. Wolbert bolted out to the early lead from his front row starting spot and from the get go, had to deal with a red hot Rocky Kugel who stalked him for the lead after getting around several cars on the opening lap.
Kugel would have multiple chances to make his way around Wolbert as Don Blaney and Tiffany Williams brought out cautions in the early going of the 20 lap main event. Meanwhile, Josh Deems was making his way forward with abandon, moving forward from his eighth starting spot and throwing himself into contention for a podium position by the halfway point.
As the second half got underway Wolbert seemed unfazed by the action behind him and put down fast, consistent laps, not earning much in the way of separation, but at the same time, making it difficult for Kugel and Deems to mount challenges without the benefit of lapped traffic to stalk with. Deems was able to make his way around Kugel in impressive fashion following a lap 16 restart, but ran out of laps in his pursuit of Wolbert who found victory lane at Sharon for the third time in his career while Chelsie Kriegisch and Brandon Ritchey rounded out the top five.
"I saw Josh Deems and Brandon Ritchey sneak in on the bottom a few times and it was fun," Wolbert said. "This new surface is great. I’m glad after almost two months we’ve been able to come back and run."

Haefke Comes From The Back To Make It Four In A Row
Steve Haefke's job wasn't easy coming into the 20 lap Economod feature. Having won three consecutive features, Haefke started from the tail of the main event and picked off cars at a stout pace en route to a fourth straight win.
However, Brandon Blackshear would not make Haefke's job any easier as he got out to the early lead while behind him, Eric Wilson and Ty Rhoades were in an intense battle for the second spot from the drop of the green flag. Out front, Blackshear worked the bottom of the surface with precision until he managed to start a spin in turns three and four on lap 7. He was able to gather the car back together and kept his forward motion going in impressive fashion while Wilson could not make up much in the way of ground due to Blackshear's slip.
Following two mid race cautions, Blackshear once again set out to put distance between himself and the rest of the field. But on the final restart, Haefke made his way to third and was beginning to take looks underneath Wilson who closed the door. Haefke then moved topside and a door to door battle for the spot ensued which Haefke won as he began to look underneath Blackshear with two laps to go.
Heading into turn one on the final circuit, Haefke made slight contact with Blackshear in a bid for the lead, while minimal, the contact helped open the door just enough for Haefke to slide underneath coming out of turn two as he won the race to the checkered flag.
“I needed that caution because I didn’t know where we were at as I was too busy watching cars and didn’t have time to look at the scoreboard to keep this thing underneath me,” Haefke said following his fourth win in a row. “I didn’t drive it in any harder that last lap. It just stuck and we kind of bumped. It wasn’t intentional, but he wasn’t going to give me any room either, and I don’t blame him because I wouldn’t have either. That was great racing for the fans."

Gordon And McGuire Battle To The Wire
Perhaps the most spirited battle for the win on Saturday night came in the first feature. Northern tier driver Chris McGuire and Andrew Gordon put on a show at the front of the Penn-Ohio Pro Stock feature that was a clean and hard as any fan could ask for.
McGuire and Rusty Martz started on the front row where McGuire quickly assumed the early lead. Gordon then went straight to work, moving under Martz on lap three in turns one and two, and by lap five, he had set his sights on the leader and the battle was underway. Behind them, Chris Schneider was making his way forward from deep in the field at a fast clip, picking off cars one at a time, while out front McGuire was entering lapped traffic on lap nine.
By lap 12, the top two contenders were door to door for the lead until McGuire used a lapped car to stave off Gordon's charge. The caution flag then waved on lap 14 for a spin in turn two, re-stacking the field. Following three straight restart attempts, McGuire kept the lead with a good jump while Schneider looked to make it a three car battle for the win. Out front, Gordon pulled door to door with the leader and the two managed to stay that way for three straight laps with neither car yielding an inch. Schneider fell victim to a flat tire in the waning laps, ending his bid to perhaps take a sweep of the evening's festivities.
Gordon was able to pull past McGuire on the front stretch on lap 21 just before a final caution reset the stage where Gordon was able to pull away in the final laps en route to what looked to be a victory. But Gordon's performance was thwarted once officials determined that an illegal suspension had been used, which disqualified him for the night while McGuire received credit for the hard fought victory.

2017 Pennsylvania Super Late Model Power Rankings: Week 18
Good afternoon race fans, it's Monday, so that means I typically write some words about the weekends racing action as it pertains to the best super late models in Pennsylvania.
This week was an odd one, as only three tracks got their program in, Dog Hollow, Thunder Mountain and Clinton County, who had a super late model special this week. Everybody else either rained out, or had scheduled off nights for the super lates, and that led to standings that are strikingly similar to last weeks, although Coleby Frye, who has been in the top five all season despite not winning a points scoring race did get the win up at Clinton County Friday. That's pretty cool.
There's not much else to say, so here's a picture of a kitten deadlifting:
Let's go ahead and get to that top ten.
1. Jeff Rine********, 87 points. Jeff went scoreless this week.
2. Alex Ferree*******, 74 points. Alex also failed to score any points this week.
3. Max Blair***, 49 points. Max took an 0fer this week as well.
4. Coleby Frye*, 42 points. Coleby got the win at Clinton County on Friday.
5. Michael Lake******, 41 points. Michael got the win at Dog Hollow Friday.
6. Dave Hess Jr.****, 39 points. Dave had a scoreless weekend.
7. Dylan Yoder*, 36 points. Dylan ran fifth at Clinton County Friday night.
8. Matt Cosner**, 33 points. Matt didn't score any points this week.
8. Jared Miley****, 33 points. Jared batted .000 for the weekend.
10. Doug Eck**, 32 points. Doug went scoreless this week.
And that's that. Let's hope this coming weekend sees more racing, so you don't have to look at silly cat pics.

Results - 7th Annual Silver Cup Pick 'Em Contest
A varied field of cars comprised of the World of Outlaws,
All Star Circuit of Champions, PA Posse, western PA regulars, and a few
independent travelers filled the pits at Lernerville Speedway for the 26th
running of the Don Martin Memorial “Silver Cup”.
True to form, we were there to provide another one of our
free special event contests to the fans as we hosted our 7th Annual
Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup Pick ‘Em contest. Our contestant count was down,
as was the car count in the pits, but in both instances the heavy hitters still
came to play.
Stefan Bleakney took the checkers as the winner of this
year’s Pick ‘Em contest by a narrow four-point margin over second place despite
only having 5/6 drivers enter the event. His winning total of 239 points is the
closest anyone has ever come to a perfect night. The highest possible point
combination this year would have resulted in 253 points. Stefan’s roster of
drivers was composed of Daryn Pittman, Donny Schatz, Tim Shaffer, Chad Kemenah,
Brandon Spithaler and Logan Wagner. A $75 VISA gift card will be in the mail
shortly to our newly-crowned 2017 Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup Pick ‘Em
champion.
Finishing in the runner-up spot was Justin Ainsley, one of
our regular players when it comes to special event Pick ‘Em contests. Justin
experienced a similar fate as our winner as only 5/6 drivers showed. His driver
roster included Daryn Pittman, Donny Schatz, Chad Kemenah, Tim Shaffer and Carl
Bowser. Jack Sodeman, Jr was his M.I.A. pick. For his efforts, Justin will receive
a Silver Cup event tee shirt.
Coming home third and rounding out the podium was John
Zeigler. Unlike the Top 2, John had all six of his driver picks enter the
event, but it was not enough to garner the top spot at the end of the night.
His picks consisted of David Gravel, Donny Schatz, Chad Kemenah, Tim Shaffer,
A.J. Flick and James McFadden. John will be the recipient of our 3rd
place prize, a $15 Subway gift card.
Thanks to all players for entering this year’s edition of
the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup Pick ‘Em. Please take a moment to recognize
all of our sponsors as without them none of this would be possible. Be on the
lookout for our Knoxville Nationals contest in less than a month. It is
arguably our most prestigious Pick ‘Em event, and has boasted a large turnout
each year.

2017 Pennsylvania Super Late Model Power Rankings: Week 17
Hey there folks, it's Monday, so that means I'm gonna update these here rankings for the week.
This week was pretty mellow as race weeks go, as most of the shows that ran were regular weekly shows. Bedford had a big payday race scheduled Friday night, but it fell victim to the weather. Dog Hollow also had rain instead of racing on Friday, but they utilized the Sunday rain date again this week.
The notable exception was PPMS, which held the first race of the new Ultimate Northeast super late model series. I know, I know, only 14 cars showed up and only one of those cars could be considered an invader, but Rome wasn't built in a day. We have had a void in regional super late model racing since the All Stars failed late model series. It'll take time and some races scheduled at tracks that don't require the biggest hammer of a motor a team has to be strapped in the car. I know there's another race scheduled at PPMS for this series next month, and I hope to see a little better support from cars, but I'm really not going to pass judgment on this potential series until a full schedule can be put together, and I've heard that's likely to happen next year.
But I digress, you read these things for the actual rankings, so let's get to 'em.
1. Jeff Rine********, 87 points. Jeff ran second Saturday night at Selinsgrove.
2. Alex Ferree*******, 74 points. Alex was second under the checkers Friday night at Lernerville and got a third at PPMS Saturday.
3. Max Blair***, 49 points. Max got the win at Eriez Sunday.
4. Dave Hess Jr. ****, 39 points. Dave came some second at Eriez Sunday.
5. Michael Lake*****, 36 points. Michael went scoreless this weekend.
5. Coleby Frye, 36 points. Coleby also took an 0fer this weekend.
7. Dylan Yoder*, 34 Points. Dylan had a scoreless weekend as well.
8. Jared Miley****, 33 points. Jared got the win at PPMS Saturday.
8. Matt Cosner**, 33 points. Matt scored zero points this week.
10. Doug Eck**, 32 points. Doug got the win at Thunder Mountain Friday night.
And that's the top ten for this week. Check back next week to see how your favorite did after this coming weekend's action.
