Bloomquist's Pill Draw Snafu Shows Flair for the Dramatic

Patrick Miller Photo

The argument can be made that Scott Bloomquist is the greatest dirt late model driver of all-time.  Sure there are other names out there that can be thrown out such as Billy Moyer, Jeff Purvis and Donnie Moran just to name a few, but no other driver in the history of the sport has moved the needle more than Bloomquist has.  The Mooresburg, Tenn. driver has found himself in some pretty hairy situations that his supporters always back him up on, and his detractors always use as reasoning to tear him down.  One thing is for certain, no driver gets a bigger reaction good or bad during driver introductions at big events than Bloomquist and this past weekend's Show-Me 100 victory was no different.

Patrick Miller Photo

After winning Thursday night's opener at the three-day event by a comfortable margin, Bloomquist looked poised to be able to relax Friday night and with a good run put himself up front for Saturday night's main event at Lucas Oil Speedway.  On Friday though a crew member of his, Jordan Bland, who is a former dirt late model pilot himself was seen messing with the pill draw machine early in the night.  As he messed with it pills fell to the ground and he was seen putting a pill back into the machine.  After this Lucas Oil officials got together and took an inventory on the pills.  Two pills were missing including the #2 pill.  Later on in the evening, Bland returned to do the official pill draw for Bloomquist and wouldn't you know it a #2 pill was drawn.  Bland was called out for it, and would eventually own up to what he had done.  At this point he drew another pill, but Lucas Oil officials later informed Bloomquist that he would not be allowed to take a time trial lap and would have to start in the back of his heat race.

From there, Bloomquist did not transfer through his heat, but won his B-Main event after driving around on three wheels after his left front suspension collapsed during the event.  Bloomquist would charge to the third position at the finish Friday night earning him the pole for Saturday night's main event which he would eventually win after race leader Jimmy Owens spun after making contact with Earl Pearson Jr. while putting him a lap down.

Now this is a serious infraction and whether Bloomquist knew about it or not is besides the point.  He took his penalty and still managed to have a good night which eventually led him to a great weekend and a $30,000 Show-Me 100 victory.  The bigger point to be made though is that Bloomquist always seems to find himself amid controversy.  In 2015, Bloomquist won the World 100 seemingly, but was light at the scales which led to a suspension from all World Racing Group events until the lawsuit he brought against Eldora Speedway was settled.  Jonathan Davenport was handed the win in that event.  The following year the ban was still going on, and Bloomquist missed the 2016 World 100 won by Bobby Pierce.

Patrick Miller Photography

Over the past few seasons Bloomquist has had a tendency to shoot himself in the foot when it comes to competing for the Lucas Oil championship.  Always with a car capable of winning the championship, Bloomquist made a habit of showing up perpetually late to events and missing his time trial causing him to have a bad night, and ultimately costing him an opportunity at winning the series championship.

The point being made is Bloomquist has always seemingly been at the forefront of controversy in this sport, but always finds a way to keep on winning.  In an era where tires are tested for cheating, and drivers are routinely caught cheating those tires, is a pill draw infraction really that bad?  Yes it's illegal and not in the spirit of competition, but there's no guarantee that a good pill draw will equal a good time trial lap.  That's all dependent on track conditions.  Either way, whichever side of the fence you fall on this argument you have to admit that Bloomquist's flair for the dramatic is good for dirt late model racing in general, and nobody moves the needle quite like Bloomquist does.

The 2018 Pennsylvania Super Late Model Power Rankings: Week 9

Hey there race fans, it's time for this weeke's update to the rankings. I know, I know, It's Tuesday, which makes it a day later than the update usually drops, but let's be serious here, yesterday was a holiday, and most of you were out doing stuff or cooking out or something and these rankings weren't going to be high on your priority list for things to do. So I figured I'd delay it a day because now that everybody is back to the daily grind, some words about the goings on of super late model racing in Pennsylvania will be a way to escape for a few minutes during these stiflingly hot days we're currently having.

This week didn't look particularly good for racing weather wise, but it ended up being a fine weekend for racing, and just about everybody got their show in, even with rain in the area. Hummingbird rained out Saturday night, and were the only track to lose a show. Dog Hollow originally lost their show Sunday night, but with the holiday the next day, they rescheduled for last night and got their show in the books.

Being a holiday weekend, many of the shows were special shows. Bedford ran for 3k Friday, Port Royal ran for 3k Saturday and 5k Sunday, and Dog Hollow ran for 4k last night. All of those shows were scored on raised points scales, so a lot of points were scored.

That said, here's the top ten for this week.

1. Jeff Rine****, 56 points. Jeff got the win at Bedford Friday, and had finishes of fourth and and second at Port Royal Saturday and Sunday.

2. Max Blair**, 28 points. Max ran third at Eriez Sunday and got the win last night at Dog Hollow.

3. Dylan Yoder**, 26 points. Dylan came home fourth at Bedford Friday, and ran third Saturday at Port Royal.

4. Michael Norris***, 21 points. Michael won Friday night at Lernerville.

5. Jared Miley**, 20 points. Jared failed to score any points this week.

5. Andy Haus*, 20 points. Andy also took an 0fer this weekend.

7. Mike Maresca*, 18 points. Mike also went scoreless this week.

8. Gene Knaub, 17 points. Gene got a second at Selinsgrove Saturday.

9. Rick Eckert**, 15 points. Rick swept the weekend at Port Royal.

10. Jason Covert*, 13 points. Jason came home second at Bedford Friday.

10. Alex Ferree, 13 points. Alex had a scoreless weekend.

And that's the top ten for this week.

An interesting note for this week is that the world's best sprint car driver, Donny Schatz, managed to score points on these super late model rankings. I mean, I know he got into a late model a couple years back and was pretty competitive right off the bat, but still, I'd never have thought he'd actually run it here in Pennsylvania. It's pretty cool to me that he had his dad tow the late model all the way out to central PA to run it on a weekend that saw his primary series, the WoO sprint car series have a couple open dates.

Check back next Monday for the updated rankings after this week's action.

The Story From Lernerville: Flick And Williamson Cruise to Victory Lane; Norris Holds Off Frank; Dietz Rolls To Third Win

Cory Stivason/Stivason Photography

It was a night to remember on Friday night at Lernerville Speedway as the fourth Fab4 Friday Fueled by Turners Premium Iced Tea graced the clay and left four of the most prominent drivers over the last two years standing in victory lane.

Abundant sunshine and warm temperatures filled the air for the first time at The Action Track in 2018, and 95 cars filled the pits making for a fantastic evening of racing on Friday night.  AJ Flick turned in a stout performance as he bested he field leaving little doubt in taking home his second feature victory of 2018 in the Peoples Gas DIRTcar Sprints while in the Precise Racing Products DIRTcar Late Models, Michael Norris made it three out of four by overtaking Chub Frank and Dave Hess in a thrilling door handle to door handle battle.

Mat Williamson once again put the Diehl Automotive Big Block Modifieds to bed after passing Garrett Krummert on lap 10 while checking out on the rest of the field, collecting his second victory of the season in the process, and in the Millerstown Pic-A-Part DIRTcar/RUSH Sportsman, Tyler Dietz found a way through lapped traffic and around Chris Schneider and Noah Brunell while finding Terry Bowser Excavating Victory Lane for the third time in 2018.

Flick Leaves No Doubt In Sprints

So far in 2018, the Peoples Gas DIRTcar Sprints have seen three different winners make their way to victory lane, and while defending champion AJ Flick found himself a bit further back in the point standings than he would have liked. By the time the checkered flag waved on the 25 lap main event, Flick had left no doubt about the performance he'd just completed, or his ability to potentially take home a second consecutive track championship as he dominated the field en route to his second win of the season.

Gary Kreiss and Dan Shetler found themselves on the front row at the initial green flag and just as soon as it had it waved, Flick made his way forward from his fifth starting position like he'd been shot out of a cannon, immediately jumping out to the early lead while behind him, Jack Sodeman Jr, and Dan Shetler took up positions two and three with Sodeman, who started ninth on the grid, showing a great deal of speed.

Cory Stivason/Stivason Photos

The caution flag waved with four laps in the books when Scott Barris found himself off the top of turn two. When action resumed, Jared Zimbardi made his way to sixth, while behind him, Cody Bova began moving up with determination advancing to ninth from his 18th starting spot. The field had one more chance to take the lead away from Flick after a lap 11 caution for Andy Feil. However, Flick pegged the restart and pulled away, managing to work the considerable lapped traffic ahead of him to perfection while never looking back en route to victory lane.

Norris Overcomes Hess and Turns Back Frank In Third Victory of Year

Michael Norris is used to having to overcome a mid pack starting spot in weekly Late Model action on many a Friday night. And on this Friday, he not overcame those circumstances once again, he overcame two very impressive running invaders in former World of Outlaw Craftsman Late Models touring driver Chub Frank and super regional heavyweight and former two time track champion Dave Hess Jr, both of whom have had a tremendous deal of success in national and regional touring action. Norris let it be known in no uncertain terms, that it is his track in the present moment and showed no signs of mercy as he made his way to the front with authority while defending his lead with an expertly timed defensive move en route to the feature win.

Cory Stivason/Stivason Photography

Ed Ferree and Hess started on the front row and Hess wasted no time in jumping out to the early lead, taking command of the field early on while Mike Pegher and an oncoming Colton Flinner looked for a way to stay in contention. Meanwhile, Frank and Norris were rapidly making their presence felt as they made their forward charges. Tony Musolino brought out the yellow flag with six laps down and when action resumed. Flinner headed for the bottom of the speedway and underneath Frank for third and began taking looks underneath Norris for the second spot. The two drivers battled for position in the mid portion of the main event with Norris stationed on the top side of the speedway, looking quite comfortable in his 'office'.

Cory Stivason/Stivason Photos

Frank then began taking looks to Flinner's outside while Hess began to encounter heavy lapped traffic. Norris began to reel in the race leader and made his way around on lap 18 just before the caution flag waved on the field for Tony Musolino. Norris elected the low groove on the restart and managed to stay ahead of Hess who was being hounded by Hess for the second position. The two would get one more chance to keep Norris out of victory lane as Chip Walsh spun in front of the field on the final lap, setting up a green-white-checkered finish. Once the race resumed, Norris looked as if he may be losing his momentum, but found away to dive low in turns three and four, taking way the lines of Hess and Frank and their chances to wrest the lead away from the defending track champion.

Williamson Does It Again In Modifieds

The Canadian Sensation doesn't call Lernerville home on a weekly basis anymore, having moved on to bigger and better things in 2018 with regards to traveling while making stops at more special events this year. However, Mat Williamson still makes time to pay a visit on the awaiting field of Big Block Modifieds at The Action Track on occasion, and on this Friday night, gave those in attendance another reminder of how impressive his run to four track championships was.

Cory Stivason/Stivason Photos

John Mollick and Garrett Krummert paced the field early on and after two early cautions, Krummert established himself as the early leader while the 9th starting Williamson made his way to the top side of the speedway and found it to his liking. Williamson made his way around Jeremiah Shingledecker for the fourth spot around the lap five mark while setting his sights on Mollick, Dave Murdick and Krummert.  With 10 laps in the books, Krummert found himself holding on to the lead by a thin margin over Williamson who had made his way around Mollick for the second spot just a lap prior.

Williamson completed the pass for the lead and never looked back while Krummert did his best to try to keep him in his sights. Behind them, Mollick managed to hold off an oncoming Murdick to take the final spot on the podium with an impressive. But out front, the story was Williamson, who found victory lane for the second time in two appearances at Lernerville in 2018.

Dietz Rolls To Victory Lane

In his three wins thus far in his 2018 campaign, Tyler Dietz has used three different scenarios to make it to victory lane including coming from last on the starting grid, surviving a hard fought three way battle involved last lap contact with the retaining wall, and his win on Friday saw him take a completely different approach. From his 11th starting spot, Dietz made his way through the field in front of him and some lapped traffic with precision and purpose en route to nailing down another feature win.

Cory Stivason/Stivason Photos
Mike Bordt brought the field to the initial green flag and immediately afterward, veteran pilot Chris Schneider, driving in the Terry Young 28Y entry, assumed command of the 19 car field while behind him, Noah Brunell split two cars in front of him to announce his candidacy for would could have been his first career feature win at The Action Track. Brunell dispatched Bordt and immediately went to work on running down Schneider for the lead with three laps down. Meanwhile, Dietz had made his way to the top five and began hunting the leaders with five laps in the books and with perennial title contender Corey McPherson mired in the mid pack behind him.

Cory Stivason/Stivason Photos

Brunell proceeded to take looks under Schneider for the lead while Dietz began taking looks under both of them on the very bottom groove of the surface where his car was finding tremendous amounts of momentum. Brunell and Dietz would then swap the second spot in a door handle to door handle battle that took over the middle portion of the 20 lap main event as both cars made their way through considerable lapped traffic. With 12 laps down, Dietz dove under Schneider following Brunell's pass of the race leader, and took the lead himself on lap 14 and after finding some clean are ahead of him, put distance between himself and Brunell over the last five laps en route to victory lane.

The 2018 Pennsylvania Super Late Model Power Rankings: Week 8

Hey there race fans, it's time for my weekly update those here takings we keep.

This week was yet another week that mother nature decided she didn't want to see much racing. All the Friday night tracks got their stuff in, with the exception of Bedford, who utilized a Sunday rain date and ran their show off on Sunday. None of the Saturday night shows scheduled managed to get their show in, though, because of the wet stuff falling from the sky. Sunday normally would have seen Eriez finally joining the fray for the year, but they too got rained out.

This week's scoring shows were mostly regular shows, with the lone special being a 3k ULMS show at Thunder Mountain on Friday night.

Week 8 officially puts us two months into the season, yet in reality, and we're starting to see some trends. Most of the names in the top ten are the same names we see year after year, with the exception of Mike Maresca, who is really a rookie in a super late model. It seems he has taken to the division in a hurry though, and I tend to think he'll be a perennial contender going into the future.

That said, let's go ahead and get to those rankings.

1. Jeff Rine***, 38 points. Jeff got the win at Bedford Sunday.

2. Jared Miley**, 20 points. Jared was victorious at Thunder Mountain Friday.

2. Andy Haus**, 20 points. Andy failed to score any points this week.

4. Mike Maresca*, 18 points. Mike came home second at Thunder Mountain Friday.

4. Max Blair*, 18 points. Max ran fourth at Thunder Mountain Friday.

6. Dylan Yoder**, 17 points. Dylan got a third at Bedford Sunday.

7. Michael Norris**, 16 points. Michael was first under the checkers at Lernerville Friday.

8. Alex Ferree, 13 points. Alex was third at Thunder Mountain Friday.

8. Gene Knaub, 13 points. Gene went scoreless this week.

10. Mike Pegher Jr., 11 points. Mike took an 0fer this weekend.

And that's your top ten for this week. Check back next weekend to see what's what. Hopefully everybody get's their shows in and we get some points scored, although, this coming holiday weekend appears as it's going to be beautiful Friday and pretty meh the rest of the weekend, so next week's update might look shockingly similar to this week's.  Gross.

And about that holiday weekend. Please use your head and refrain from drinking and driving. It's never cool to do that, and it's really not difficult to just not drive if you've had a little too much to drink. And use caution if you decide you want to use fireworks. It's definitely not cool to blow your fingers off. Nobody wants to give a high three.

The 2018 Pennsylvania Super Late Model Power Rankings: Week 7

Hey there race fans, time for me to update the rankings for this week.

Mother Nature played havoc on the racing yet again this past weekend, as all of Saturday's tracks that had super late models scheduled were rained out. This seems to be a prevailing scenario this season. This coming weekend looks terrible again. This is terribly frustrating for everybody involved, from fans to racers and everybody in between. Hopefully we can get a nice weekend soon that allows everybody to get their racing fix as regularly scheduled.

Speaking of regularly scheduled, I made an error last week in my scoring. I have pledged to score every super late model race in the state these days, and I missed one track. McKean County Raceway added a super program kinda last minute to their already scheduled opener, which was to be headlined by crate late models. I had forgotten this in my scoring, so the point totals were off by that show. I have added those points into the poll and adjusted the scores accordingly. I apologize for the error.

Another issue that came up this week was the show at Dog Hollow. They advertised a 3k purse, which would have made it a special under my scoring system. However, the payout for said race was sliding based on car count with the cutoff at 19 cars. Less than 19 cars brought it all the way down to 1500 to win, which is effectively just a regular show. They failed to get 19+ cars, so it was scored as regular show. This will apply with all sliding scale payout shows going into the future. The race will be scored on whatever payout is actually paid.

That said, let's get to this week's top 10.

1. Jeff Rine**, 33 points. Jeff ran second at Bedford Friday.

2. Andy Haus*, 20 points. Andy picked up the win at Bedford Friday.

3. Dylan Yoder**, 14 Points. Dylan failed to score any points this week.

3. Max Blair*, 14 points. Max was one of the beneficiaries of my scoring error. He got the win last week at Mckean. This past weekend, he got fifth at Dog Hollow Friday.

5. Jared Miley*, 13 points. Jared got the win at Lernerville Friday.

5. Gene Knaub, 13 points. Gene took an 0fer this weekend.

7.  Michael Maresca*, 12 points. Michael went scoreless this week.

8. Michael Norris*, 11 points. Michael came home second at Lernerville Friday.

8. Mike Pegher Jr. , 11 points. Mike was fourth at Lernerville Friday.

10. Dave Troutman**, Scott Bloomquist*, Coleby Frye. None of the three managed to score any points this week.

And that's the top ten for this week. Check back next Monday for updated results after this coming weekend's action. However, if the weekend is a total wash and nobody gets any shows in, then I'll just forgo the pictures of rain and whining and I'll see ya in two weeks. Let's hope that's not the case, though.

The Story From Tyler County- Miley Finishes Weekend Sweep With Earl Hill Memorial Victory

Patrick Miller Photo

All goes well so far for "The Jet", Jared Miley early on in his 2018 campaign and if this weekend was any indication of what is to come, it could be a very lucrative one for him and his new owner Joe Corrado. Miley managed to drive away from the field Friday night at Lernerville Speedway and on Saturday night, he left The Bullring at Tyler, County, West Virginia with a one point lead in the early Ultimate Northeast Late Model point standings as he found Victory lane in the $5,000 to win Earl Hill Memorial for the third time in his career.

Miley, of Pittsburgh, Pa., picked up his second career Ultimate Northeast Super Late Model Series victory in the 30th annual Earl Hill Memorial at Tyler County Speedway.
The veteran wheel man passed early race leader Tyler Carpenter of Parkersburg, W.Va., just as the two were entering lapped traffic early in the event. After several attempts to overtake Carpenter for the lead early in the event were overcome by Carpenter, lapped traffic proved to be just what the doctor ordered as Miley began to pull away from the field over the rest of the distance and was dominant once in clean air.

The event was slowed by just one caution flag for Cody Rogers who slowed to a stop in turn four around the halfway mark. After the yellow, Miley was able to pull away from Derek Doll and the third running Carpenter the rest of the distance, winning the feature by over a straightaway. Zack Dohm of Cross Lanes, W.Va., was the hard charger of the event advancing from his ninth starting position to finish in fourth.

Ultimate Northeast officials pushed the show along with the threat of weather imminent throughout the day and were able to get the entire show in without a hitch.

The Story From Lernerville- Miley Tops Field in Frank Choura Memorial; Conley Cruises; King Jr. Wires Modifieds; Dietz Dazzles In Pro Stocks

Howie Balis Photo

Sarver, PA (May 11, 2018) The Fab4 Fueled by Turners Premium Iced Tea graced the clay at The Action Track for the second time in 2018 with sunshine on the track and a pit area stocked with 83 cars ready to do battle. And when the the final checkered flag waved, three new winners found Terry Bowser Excavating Victory Lane while Tyler Dietz made his second appearance.

Jared Miley left no doubt in the inaugural Frank Choura Memorial for the Precise Racing Products as he led from start to finish en route to a $2525 victory. In the Diehl Automotive DIRTcar Big Block Modifieds, Rex King Jr. looked dominant early on and held off a late charge from Jim Weller to take his first Lernerville victory of 2018.

In the Peoples Gas DIRTcar Sprints, several members of Tony Stewart's Arctic Cat All Star Sprints were on hand and one of them came up with a fast and smooth 25 laps while splitting lapped traffic twice in the waning laps to secure his first career Lernerville victory. And in the Millerstown Pic-A-Part DIRTcar/RUSH Pro Stocks, a feeling of deja vu swept over the crowd on hand as the trio of Noah Brunell, Tyler Dietz and Corey McPherson found themselves running within inches of each other coming out of turn four on the last lap. And for the second week in a row. Dietz edged the competition in a thrilling battle that was decided by a fraction of a second.

Conley Cruises

With a mixed field of regular weekly drivers, combined with a few All Stars and a pair of Patriot Sprint drivers who decided to pay a visit, the Peoples Gas Sprint field had a little something for everyone on Friday night. Fresh off a very encouraging performance at Sharon Speedway, former track champion Carl Bowser found himself battling for yet another Lernerville win and nearly earned it had it not been for a near perfect performance from visiting All Star Cale Conley.

Brandon Matus started on the pole and within two laps found himself looking at the tail tank of Conley who assumed the early lead. Following a caution for debris three laps in, Conley stretched out to a sizable lead while behind him, Bowser,  AJ Flick, George Hobaugh and Brent Matus found themselves in position battles all over the speedway.

Bowser started to run down Conley past the halfway point as lapped traffic started appearing in front of the leader. However, Conley made his way through in very decisive fashion, dispatching one piece of lapped traffic after another while Bowser would become hung up behind two cars as the laps wound down. He would make his way trough them, but the gap up front was too much to overcome with too few laps remaining as Conley cruised to victory lane.

Miley Leaves No Doubt

It had been quite some time since Jared Miley had dropped in for a weekly show and once he hit the track, he looked as if he hadn't been away at all as he wired the field with authority on Friday night.  Miley started on the pole and quickly bolted out to a commanding lead followed by Alex Ferree, Mike Pegher Jr. and defending champion Michael Norris.

Ferree and Norris managed to battle door handle to door handle for the first half of the race, swapping the second spot more than once in the early going. The battle helped Miley extend his margin up front to the point that fans could only watch the battles behind him for position. Norris was able to make his way around Ferree for the second spot as the laps wound down, but no one had an answer for Miley whether they were in clean air or maneuvering around lapped traffic. Miley collected the $2525 winner's share of the purse while etching his name in the history books as the inaugural event winner of the Frank Choura Memorial.

King Jr. Checks Out and Holds On

It took double overtime for Rex King Jr. to collect his first Lernerville win of the season as the Ohio native pegged two critical restarts and kept an oncoming Jim Weller at bay en route to the victory.  Eric Gabany started on the pole but saw his hopes to stay out front vanquished by a spin with one lap in the books.  King then took control of the field while the action behind him heated up with position battles surfacing among  Rex King Sr., Garrett Krummert and Brian Swartzlander and Weller

Krummert made his way around King Sr. with nine laps down, working the bottom of the speedway. However, the battle allowed King Jr. to drive away from his pursuers until a caution on lap 14 for Jim Rasey who drove off the top of turn four. On the ensuing restart, Swartzlander spun in turn four in front of the oncoming field causing King Sr., Jeremiah Shingledecker and Rasey to come to a stop on the front stretch.

When action resumed, Weller began pressing Krummert for the second spot and managed to make his way around, using Krummert's preferred line to take the position. Weller then began chasing down King Jr. as Dave Murdick emerged with the third spot and began hunting Weller. All progress was halted with 24 laps down for a Travis Walsh caution, and then once again for Chris Rudolph, making for a second green-white-checkered finish. King Jr. withstood any challenges from the pack behind him the rest of the way while Murdick managed to take second very briefly from Weller, losing the spot a lap later.

Dietz Dazzles Once Again In Pro Stocks

Thrilling last lap finishes seem to be the way of it in the early portion of the season as once again, the victory wasn't decided until very late in the 20 lap feature, and on this night, not until the top three cars crossed the start/finish line.

John McCann brought the field to the green flag but it would not take long for opening night runner up finisher, Noah Brunell to start taking looks to the inside of early race leader Bob Egley.  With seven laps in the books, Brunell dove under Egley in turn three and came to the stripe with the lead. Meanwhile, Tyler Dietz was making a charge to the front with authority and found himself in the fourth spot at the halfway mark of the race.

Brunell found himself in lapped traffic at the lap 14 mark while Egley and McPherson engaged in a fierce battle for the third spot. With 18 laps in the books, Chase Lambert brought out the caution flag as he spun on the top of the backstretch near turn two. The ensuing restart set the stage as McPherson, Dietz and Brunell made it clear that they would decide the outcome themselves. The three cars came out of turn four on the final lap in a virtual dead heat as Dietz made his way for he finish line despite contact of the hard racing variety from Brunell. Dietz found himself barely edging his two competitors and collected his second viotory in his two Lernerville appearances in 2018 so far.
