The 2018 Pennsylvania Super Late Model Power Rankings: Week 1
Hey there folks. Port Royal got it's opener in this past Saturday, and with that, super late model racing kicked off it's season here in Pennsylvania. So that means it's time to fire up these rankings for the 2018 Season.
If you're unfamiliar to these rankings, let me explain what they are. I started computing these rankings about five years ago, and since then they've morphed a bit. When I first started them, I only scored weekly shows in western Pennsylvania, after a couple years I added specials on a sliding scale, but only at what I described as western Pennsylvania tracks. Then last year, I decided it was time to score every super late model race in the state of Pennsylvania, with specials scored on a sliding scale based on the payout of said specials. This is what will be happening again this year and every year going into the future.
The current scoring schedule is as follows:
I only score that first five cars in any feature.
Regular weekly features paying the regular payout will be scored on a five point scale, meaning the winner gets five points, second gets four, and so on and so forth down to one point for a fifth.
A special show paying less than five thousand to the winner will be on a seven point scale, where basically the top five gets bumped up two points.
A special show paying more than five thousand but less then ten thousand will be on an eight point scale, meaning everybody in the top five get's bumped up three points.
A special show paying from ten thousand to twenty thousand will be on a ten point scale, which means everybody in the top five will get a five point bump.
The two special shows in the state that pay more than twenty thousand (The Firecracker 100 at Lernerville, and the Pittsburgher 100 at PPMS) will be scored on a a twenty point scale, so the winner will get twenty points, second gets nineteen, and so on and so forth down to fifteen points for running fifth.
Now that we've got that out of the way, let's get to the first week of scoring.
Only Port Royal got a show in, as they were the only track that ran super lates this week. Their show had a modest bump in purse from their usual pay scale, so it scored as a >5k special.
So for week one, only five drivers have scored.
1. Jeff Rine*, 7 points. Jeff picked up the win at Port Royal on Saturday night.
2. Coleby Frye, 6 points. Coleby followed Jeff across the line Saturday.
3. Andy Haus, 5 points. Andy followed Coleby across the line Saturday.
4. Trent Brenneman, 4 points. Trent was fourth in the rundown Saturday.
5. Tim Smith, 3 points. Tim ran fifth Saturday.
And that's the top five for this week. Normally, I post the top ten each week, but since only one track got a show in, there's only a top five. That'll work itself out in coming weeks as other tracks start lifting their lids on the season as well.
And it's no surprise that defending rankings champ Jeff Rine has taken the early lead. He's been at or very near the top of the poll from day one.
That's it for this week, check back next Monday to see the updated rankings, although preliminary weather reports for next weekend are hot garbage, so there may not actually be an update. In the event that a weekend goes without shows due to weather or whatever, I'll probably forgo the rankings that week.
