David Gravel is still searching for his first win on the young season |
The World of Outlaws make their return this weekend following the rare off-week they were given on the west coast. Despite their current outlook, nasty weather will continue to plague much of the country - a handful have already fallen victim to Mother Nature.
The Greatest Show on Dirt will grace the clay at Arizona Speedway in Queen Creek, Ariz. The forecast not only shows a dry weekend, but a blistering 90+ degree day is in store for those in the southwest.
Saturday night will mark the third time in series history that the Outlaws visit Arizona Speedway, with both appearances coming the the past two years. It was Shane Stewart picking up the inaugural win on Mar. 3rd, 2016 following a mid-race pass of Joey Saldana. Last season saw Rico Abreu visit victory lane on April 8th after he overtook the lead from Brian Brown.
If we were a betting blog...our money would be on David Gravel to win on Saturday night for three reasons. Interestingly enough, Gravel finished runner-up on both occasions that the Outlaws have ran here...He's qualified within the Top 10 both years, and the current format favors a good time trialer...Lastly, it's just time for the CJB Motorsports #5 to pick up a win. Book it if you have any spare change laying around.
The popular King of the West sprint car series looks to start their 2018 campaign off this weekend at the Kern County Raceway Park in Bakersfield, Calif. Defending series champion Bud Kaeding will lead the talented west coast contingents into battle.
Last year's series runner-up, Gio Scelzi, nabbed a tour-high 3 wins. Other series winners last year were Bud Kaeding (2), Kyle Hirst (2), Shane Golobic (2), Cory Eliason (2), Rico Abreu, Mitchell Faccinto, Chase Johnson, Buddy Kofoid and D.J. Netto.
Rain/wind/snow has already claimed the scheduled season openers for the All Star Circuit of Champions and the Midwest Open Wheel Association sprint cars. The All Stars were scheduled for a Friday/Saturday doubleheader at Atomic Speedway (OH) and Attica Raceway Park (OH), meanwhile MOWA was scheduled to be at Tri-City Raceway (IL) and 34 Raceway (IA). St. Francois County Raceway in Farmington, Missouri supposed to be featuring 410 sprint cars this weekend. But inclement weather has claimed their event as well.
Williams Grove Speedway looks to have the best chance of running their weekly show on Friday night. Greg Hodnett is the current points lead through two events followed by T.J. Stutts, Lucas Wolfe, Brock Zearfoss and Caleb Helms. Lucas Wolfe and Ryan Taylor have each collected track wins on the season.
Port Royal Speedway and Lincoln Speedway will have their work cut out for them on Saturday if they plan on racing - current forecasts call for a high of 35 degrees and 3-5 inches of snow.
BAPS Motor Speedway (formerly Susquehanna Speedway), located in the same vicinity as the other Central PA tracks, has a special Sunday 410 sprint show planned. Their situation is not as dire as the Saturday night tracks, but it looks like it'll take a little more than luck if any cars are to hit the track on Sunday afternoon.
