Action Heating Up Out West-

The Amsoil USAC/CRA Series is having, arguably, one of its most competitive seasons in history.  There have been 11 different winners, through the season's first 16 races.  Entering this weekend, there are 8 races remaining in the 2016 tour, while the final 5 races will be combined with the USAC National Sprint Car Tour.  That means that both of this weekend's races at Canyon Speedway Park, along with October 15th at Perris, are the 3 last "stand alone" races of the season, for the USAC/CRA regulars.  The Dirt Network will be on-hand this Friday and Saturday, covering all the action of this year's Hall of Fame Classic!

History

The Hall of Fame Classic has been held at Canyon Speedway Park, in Peoria, Arizona (just North of Phoenix), since 2000.  A few years have been skipped since then, and the race has changed its format a few times, but this is still one of the biggest Sprint Car shows in Arizona!  "The Demon" Damion Gardner and the late, legendary, Bryan Clauson have each won this race twice, in past seasons.  Making that even more impressive for "The Demon", this race used to be run in conjunction with the USAC National Sprint Car Series, until recently.  Adding more excitement to this event, legendary drivers are being elected into the Arizona Motorsports Hall of Fame.  This year's class includes Jimmy Blanton (who will serve as Grand Marshall), along with Karl Korbacher, Corky Larson, Henry "Tex" Guthrie, Buddy Rice and "Big" Bob Moore.

Canyon Speedway Park is a 1/3 mile clay oval located in Peoria, Arizona (just North of Phoenix)

Predictions

"The Demon" Damion Gardner has the most wins in USAC/CRA Series history and enters this year's Hall of Fame Classic with a 104-point edge over Richard Vander Weerd.  Both of the California-native drivers have been the most consistent this year, with Gardner posting 12 Top-5 finishes and Vander Weerd posting 9 Top-5's, to date.  Gardner has also won the most races to date, with 3, while Vander Weerd has only visited victory lane once so far this season, but looks to add to his total this weekend, at Canyon.  I know that I'm really "going out on a limb" here, when I say that I think "The Demon" is the man to beat this weekend.  In addition to his 2 previous Hall of Fame Classic victories, Gardner also won a Copper on Dirt main event, which was a USAC/CRA Series race held in February of 2014.  I think it goes without saying, but "The Demon" is always the man to beat, whenever he straps-in to a USAC/CRA Series Sprint Car!

If you're looking for a darkhorse to win, Arizona's local contingent of talent will have a couple of intriguing options.  R.J. Johnson has been dominating the 360 USAC Southwest Sprint Car Series this year, in addition to the last several seasons.  When R.J. isn't busy racing a Sprint Car in Arizona, he has traveled to California and raced with the USAC/CRA Series this season, having posted 2 Top-5 finishes, to date. He will look to add to those numbers this weekend, along with searching for his first USAC/CRA Seris win of the year. "Chargin'" Charles Davis Jr. won the Hall of Fame Classic in 2003 and continues to prove that he is one of the best Sprint Car drivers in Arizona.  Davis Jr. primarily focuses on 360 Sprint Car racing these days, but it has been rumored that he will have a 410 installed and ready for business this weekend.  Considered to be a "home game" for both, don't be surprised if R.J. Johnson or Charles Davis Jr. contend for wins at this year's Hall of Fame Classic!

Arizona shoe, R.J. Johnson races this 51 machine in 410 competition!
Arizona race fans can look for Charles Davis Jr. in his familiar 50 ride this weekend!

Top 25 National Sprint Car Poll - Week 18

Shane Stewart's 2 wins propel him to No. 3 in our rankings

After a couple of down weekends, sprint car racing picked up in the northeast region across all of Pennsylvania and Ohio. Altogether, eight events took place between the two bordering states from Thursday through Saturday. On top of those, 410 Sprints also were on the card at Hartford Speedway on Friday night and in California on Saturday for a King of the West series race.

It was Shane Stewart, who moves up one spot to occupy No. 3 in our rankings, captured a pair of World of Outlaws wins over the weekend at Hartford Speedway and Eldora Speedway. These wins are just the latest in his up-and-down season where the team has continually fought to find consistency. The Larson Marks team heads into the homestretch of the season where they'll look to pick up a few more wins and regain 5th in the World of Outlaws championship standings.

Logan Schuchart continued his surge towards the top of our poll with back-to-back second place finishes with the World of Outlaws at Eldora and Lernerville. Shark Racing now heads home to Williams Grove for the prestigious National Open where he'll look to build off his recent successes at one of his home tracks.

Craig Dollansky, who interestingly didn't make a start this past weekend, returns to the poll after just a one week hiatus. Joining him back in the poll after a one week absence is Bill Balog, who struggled mightily in his trip to Central PA where he competed at Williams Grove and Lincoln Speedway.

The Story From Eriez; Miley Dominates Late Models for $6,000 Payday; Michael Jr Take UEMS Honors; Genco Edges Blair in Crates

With perfect weather on hand and fall like temperatures in the air, the annual September Sweep at Eriez Speedway concluded on Saturday night and seemed to feed off the excitement of the previous night. Less than 24 hours earlier, Dave Hess Jr. brought fans to their feet with a dramatic last corner pass for the win over Chub Frank in ULMS Late Model action. Hess was poised to take home a six thousand dollar pay day plus a two thousand dollar bonus if he could deliver the goods on Saturday night, but Jared Miley had other ideas and bested the stout field of competition on hand en route to victory lane.

In UEMS Modified action, Rich Michael Jr. appeared to check out to the easy victory but narrowly escaped a furious charge from Joel Watson to take the victory and increase his series points lead while in the RUSH Late Models, track champion Jason Genco won a thrilling battle with Max Blair that came down to mere hundredths of a second at the line. In Street Stock action Brandon Grotters put the field behind him quickly to collect the $1,500 pay day and John Zeleznik wired the field in the 15 lap Challenger main event.

ULMS Late Models:

Jared Miley didn't a front row starting spot, or a restart, or attrition to put the field behind him with authority on Saturday night. He simply brought a rocket ship to the affair, and maneuvered it with precision and purpose through a tough field of veterans on his way to victory lane.

Charles Powell Jr. and Boom Briggs brought the field to the green flag and in the early going, it was Briggs who jumped out to the early lead. Briggs gained some early separation from the chase pack, consisting of  Powell, Greg Oakes, Chub Frank and Max Blair with Miley lurking behind them. While Briggs was setting the pace up front, Oakes made his way underneath Powell to take the second spot with seven laps in the books while Miley and Blair started an intense battle for the fifth position.

But behind all of that was one Dave Hess who started 13th on the grid and was getting through the field like a banshee as Miley made his way around Blair for fifth, overtaking on the outside. Miley and the outside lane worked like a charm through the middle portion of the race as he made his way around Chub Frank for third on lap 19 while Hess took two for the price of one on lap 16, getting around both Powell and Max Blair to join the front runners.

By lap 20, it was clear the race was coming down to a two car showdown between Hess and Miley as the latter went around Briggs for the lead while Hess moved to third on lap 23. With Miley getting into thick lapped traffic, and Hess making his way to the second spot, the tension ramped up, and at first, it appeared that Hess would be able to hunt and battle Miley for the victory. However, Miley very calmly picked through lapped traffic without missing a beat while Hess found himself stuck behind two lapped cars that took too many laps to get around.

As the laps wound down, Miley stretched his advantage to a straightaway over Hess and he cruised to victory lane while Chub Frank made one final pass around Briggs for third in the waning moments. But the night belonged to Miley who was the class of the field on this night.

Bill Galford Photo

"The car was just awesome tonight and the race track was too, you could race all over it," Miley said in victory lane. "Our tires kind of gave out last night coming up through the field so fast but thankfully we got the win tonight though. We always love coming up here, we try to come up for all the big races they have. It's really nice when the track is nice and smooth like it was tonight."

FINISH: (50 Laps; $6,000 to Win)

1. Jared Miley 2. Dave Hess 3. Chub Frank  4. Max Blair 5. Boom Briggs 6. Rob Blair 7. John Volpe 8. Greg Oakes 9. Matt Urban 10. Rich Gardner 11. Darrell Bossard  12. Charles Powell Jr.

BMain Winners: Jake Finnerty, Rich Gardner

UEMS Modifieds

Rich Michael Jr. took two laps to get around pole sitter and early leader Brent Rhebergen and never looked back, which is a good thing, because if he'd have focused on a fast closing Joel Watson in the final laps, the outcome of the 30 lap UEMS feature may have been a little bit different.

That is not to say Michael didn't have the field in the palm of his hand for the majority of the race though.  Rhebergen and Shane Crotty started on the front row and following Michael's ascension from his third starting spot, Rherbergen retained the second spot while Watson made his way to fourth in the early going.  Michael looked to be in strong command early on with a sizable lead on  Rherbergen and then an even larger gap developed between the front runners and Crotty, Watson and Dan Sasso running in the fifth spot.

Bill Galford Photo

Lurking behind them all, Eriez track champion, David Scott had started ninth and was working forward when the caution flag came out on with 11 laps in the books for Jeremy Double.

On the ensuing restart, Rhebergen looked to see if he could make his way underneath Michael to retake the lead. Meanwhile Watson was sizing up Rherbergen on the outside in a potential bid for the second spot, but just one lap later, Rherbergen spun in front of the field in turn two while running second, causing a pileup and reshuffling the order.  Watson then inherited the second spot and when action resumed, Michael took off like he'd been shot out of a cannon and held a huge lead, aided by Dan Sasso who put pressure on and then made his way around Watson for the second spot while Scott had moved up to fifth.  Watson was able to move back under Sasso to take back the spot on lap 20, and in front of him, Michael was looking at a heavy dose of lapped traffic.

Michael got around the back markers as best he could, while Watson gained ground at a furious pace, trying desperately get back into a position to battle for the lead, as the white flag waved, Watson found himself within a second of, erasing a huge advantage, but simply ran out of laps in the end as Michael crossed the line first claiming the $2,000 check and increasing his lead in the point standings in the process.

Bill Galford Photo

"That track was tough there at the end there," Michael Jr. said. "I think I got into Johnny Boyd all down the front straightaway there when I was trying to get around him. The track was nice, a lot better than last night since they got the rutts out of there. I just want to thank my crew and all the sponsors on the car, I couldn't do it without them."

FINISH: ( 30 Laps; $2,000 To Win)

1. Rich Michael Jr. 2. Joel Watson 3. Dan Sasso 4. Shane Crotty 5. David Scott 6. Perry McDonald
7. Dave Hess  8. Kyle Bedell 9. Troy Johnson 10. Carl McKinney 11. Mike Kinney
12. Jeremy Double 13. John Boyd 14. Brent Rhebergen 15. Josh McDonald 16. Steve Sorenberger Jr.
17. #29 18. Billy Henry 19. Butch Southwell 20. Al Brewer 21. Kirk Bradley
22. Ken Zimmer 23. Michael McGhee 24. Dennis Lunger Jr. 25. Dan McDonald

RUSH Crate Late Models:

There might not have been as dramatic a finish at September Sweep weekend as was seen in the 25 lap RUSH Crate Late Model feature. Jason Genco and Max Blair can both attest to that point of view, since they gave fans every reason to stand up coming off the final corner on the final lap in a thrilling drag race to the line. And in the end Genco put his car over the line first to collect the $3,000 pay day, causing plenty of moments of crowd banter in the aftermath.

Genco brought the field to the green and assumed the early lead while Randy Hall and New York invader Wayne Robertson tucked in line behind him in the early going. Moving forward early on with authority was Dennis Lunger who was the first of the front runners to use the top side, and also Blair who was picking up spots left and right in the early going after starting ninth on the grid.

Bill Galford Photo

Following a pair of cautions on lap nine and 13, the action resumed and saw Genco keep the field behind him while Blair got around Lunger for the fourth spot, and then wrested the third spot away from Anderson. By lap 16, Blair was looking underneath Hall for the second spot. Hall slammed the door in the meantime, but following a lap 19 caution and restart Blair started to feel the sense of urgency and went to the outside of Hall on lap 22 just before one final caution set the stage for a classic finish.

On the restart, Blair was all over Genco's back bumper and as the white flag flew, Blair went up high to get around the leader in turns one and two which didn't yield enough momentum to make the pass. Blair gathered himself and dove in low in the final set of turns as the two leaders were door handle to door handle coming off the final corner, but for Blair, it would be too little, too late, as Genco won the drag race the line with no room for error, beating Blair by mere fractions of a second.

Bill Galford Photo

"If we could have gone green flag there at the end we would have been fine but I knew he (Max Blair) would be there eventually, he lets you know when he's there for sure," Genco said. "I started getting loose and losing the rear end and I knew he had a good chance on the top side so I came across the racetrack and I had a feeling that was what was going to happen, but what goes around comes around, it was good racing."

FINISH: (25 Laps; $3,000 To Win)

1. Jason Genco 2. Max Blair 3. Randy Hall 4. Jared Miley 5. Wayne Robertson 6. Dave Lyon
7. Dennis Lunger 8. Kyle Emmer 9.Damon Bidwell 10. Scott Gurdak 11. Eric Wilson
12. Darrell Bossard  13. Wyatt Scott 14. Bruce Hardesky 15. Andy Boozel 16. John Waters

Street Stocks:

Brandon Groters saved the best for last on the final night of action for the season, and left the premises with $1500 to put towards his 2017 campaign in the process as he held off the field following a late race caution and restart to take the victory in Street Stock action

Dan Maxim brought the field to the green flag and from the get go, had immediate pressure from Groters to contend with. Groters took the lead with a pass on the bottom of turn four upon which the yellow flag emerged for Gary Fisher's spin with four laps down.  On the following restart, Groters maintained the advantage while behind him, track champion Chris McGuire was making his presence felt as he tracked and passed Shawn Fawcett for the third spot. With eight laps in the books, Don McGuire was making forward progress and Groters found himself in heavy lapped traffic, it looked as if Groters could be in trouble with fast cars approaching, but a lap 11 caution for a tangle in turn three reset the scene.

Bill Galford Photo

When action resumed, Groters started getting separation as Chris and Don McGuire battled for second, but progress was halted again for two cautions, the second one coming with 15 laps down. On the restart, Chris McGuire looked underneath Dan for the second spot once again but could not make his way around, while out front Groters stuck to the top side and went unchallenged the rest of the way to collect the win.

"This race is a little more dear to my heart," Groters said following the win. "Bob and Kathy have a great race track, best in the area all year. It's an awesome night to get the win. I took a little breather and went on vacation so I missed the last points night but this is the first September Sweep win I've had and I'm happy to take the money home tonight. We've already got plans to take it down to CRS and super tune it over the winter so you might just be seeing more of us in victory lane next year."

FINISH: (25 Laps; $1500 To Win)

1. Brandon Groters 2. Don McGuire 3. Chris McGuire 4. Gary Fisher 5. Rob Bates
6. Mark Thompson 7. Jim Kennerknecht 8. Garrett Galvert 9. Bill Applebee 10. Mike Moon

21. Shawn Fawcett 22. Brent Crandall 23. Matt Lorowski 24. Denny Degelman 25. Brian Crandall
26. Fuzzy Fields (DQ) 27. Michael Reed (DNS)

Challengers:

In a caution marred feature which included wheels coming off and a multiple car pileup, John Zeleznik found himself in victory lane for his biggest career payday in a car which he admittedly brought out of the barn just to best a certain competitor. Zeleznik led from the drop of the green flag and endured multiple restarts en route to the $1,000 pay day in the 15 lap main event, and was never seriously threatened for the lead, running smooth and consistent green flag laps while keeping William Vanguilder and a hard charging Andy Proper at bay.

Meanwhile, track champion Rob Blair will be looking to sweep the weekend, which would earn him an additional bonus should he be able to complete the task while Pennsylvania-TDN Weekly Super Late Model Champion Max Blair looks to add to his trophy collection. But coming in to crash the party will be one Jared Miley who gave the World of Outlaw Late Models all they could handle and then some at Eriez back in August.

On the UEMS side of the equation, Ischua New York's Rich Michael Jr., Joel Watson and Carl Watson are seperated by 20 points headed into the weekend. Meanwhile,  area standout and Eriez track champion "Slow Ride" David Scott is hovering in fourth place and will be looking to defend home turf.

World of Outlaw Sprints at Lernerville Speedway

Pat Miller Photo

So, you say you'd like to see some things with wings. Lernerville plays host to the annual Commonwealth Clash on Saturday Night and it promises to be a great night for action at the action track.  You'll see the best of the best here, taking on the area's finest and a few invaders from both Ohio and Central Pennsylvania as well.

When: Saturday Night- Grandstands open at 5 PM  Qualifying at 7:15 PM

Tickets: Reserved- $32  General Admission- $30

What at Stake:

$10,000 to win for the World of Outlaw Sprint Cars.

What To Look For:

Look for Donny Schatz to win.  Actually, we're just kidding, or not.  Schatz has once again made a mockery of the point standings and unless there's an injury on his part, will win yet another championship. Look for David Gravel, Joey Saldana and Daryn Pittman to be right there in the mix as well as all of them have all either won or come close to the win in Sarver and are probably the best bets to challenge Schatz for the win. Last time out, in 2014, Logan Wagner started on the poll with Saldana leading all 35 laps as 41 cars were in the pits. Look for a similar number this weekend.

Top 25 National Sprint Car Poll - Week 17

Ryan Smith makes his debut in our Top 25 rankings

It's beginning to feel like the season is coming to an end, and my notion was confirmed when I put together this week's results file for our voting panel. Only 10 '410' sprint car races across the country were scheduled, with all but one being ran as scheduled. The only event to be lost to rain was Atomic Speedway's "Jeff Gordon Night" in southern Ohio.

As the season is winding down, we've developed a gameplan for our rankings. Instead of releasing weekly up through the World Finals at the end of October, we'll only continue our weekly trend for the next two weeks, and then go on hiatus until the week following the World Finals. That will mark the end of our inaugural sprint car poll.

Enough about the future, let's get to the down and dirty that took place last weekend. There were nine different winners among the nine races. Jason Johnson, Donny Schatz, Brad Sweet, Logan Schuchart, Shane Stewart, Ryan Smith and Brent Marks were the only drivers to record multiple Top 5's.

Sliding into the Top 25 this week is a trio of Central Pennsylvania drivers. Brent Marks (19), Lucas Wolfe (20) and Ryan Smith (22) all move up into the poll. Marks and Wolfe have been in and out over the course of the year, whereas this is Ryan Smith's debut in our rankings.

In order for them to move up, three drivers had to drop out of the rankings to make room for the PA Posse. Craig Dollansky, Sammy Swindell, and Bill Balog are the drivers that fell out of the Top 25.

This weekend we'll see major events at Eldora Speedway, Lernerville Speedway, and Lincoln Speedway that will be sure to shake up the rankings. Be sure to get out and support your local dirt track this weekend, before winter comes and it's too late!

Our panel of voting members for Week 17 included the following:

Commentary: Super Dirt Week's New Beginning Could Be Welcome Change

Perhaps Oswego brings an opportunity, one that may bring the racing up to the level of the party...

It doesn't feel right.  It doesn't seem natural. Super Dirt Week at any place other than the Moody Mile is a notion that is hard to get a handle on at first. And fans are allowed to feel one way or another on the matter. We're not here to judge tastes, and we're also not here to wax romantic on how good the racing at Syracuse was either. There were great races there, and there were some that made people want to fall asleep.

And for those who hold their memories of the mile in a special place, never to be surpassed by any other event for as long as they live, you're entitled. After all, your commitment to the event for 40 plus years as a group made Super Dirt Week's future a strong priority last off season.

But the events that transpired this week, the laying of tons of clay on top of the asphalt at the legendary Oswego Speedway, have piqued the interest of many, including many of which have never been before. And fans who have been going since day one should be excited too. Excited because maybe that much more of the track will be visible. Excited because it may lead to drivers who couldn't really run Syracuse with their program may now have a chance to compete and not just to bow out in the last chance races and party on Sunday. Excited to see their friends they see every Super Dirt Week in a different place where no one knows for sure what to expect.

Gary Risch Jr Photo

I'm not saying there won't be some rough moments. Doing the first of anything with this particular scope and magnitude in unfamiliar surroundings will need some time to iron out. I'm not saying the racing will be perfect at Oswego either. I'm sure there will be a challenge or two to overcome.

"I think it's going to be very interesting," Australian Super Dirt Car touring series driver Peter Britten said.  "It's a big blindside for a lot of teams."

But, at least all the drivers will be looking at the same challenge more or less together and putting their brains to work on how to adjust.

"It's going to be a different experience," Tour driver Larry Wight said.  "After 6-8 hot laps we're going to have a good idea of what to do, we do it at all the different tracks we go to" (tour guys)

Gary Risch Jr Photo

I'm betting the challenges from a surface standpoint are going to be probably less than most people are thinking. Yes, we've heard horror stories from some places where laying dirt over asphalt has not gone according to plan. But there have been successes too. And with a lot on the line, in front of a huge audience, the stakes are high, but will probably bring out the best in those who will be the caretakers of the surface. The current crew have new dirt, and every manner of equipment and expertise necessary to get the job done and then some.

"We've worked really hard here the last few weeks," World Racing Group's Gary Risch Jr. said Tuesday at the kickoff press conference. "We came together with the Wights and Eric Kingsley. putting wood chips down to preserve the asphalt surfact. We're going to be ready to go.  The staff here has been really helpful.  It's been great having good equipment.  We can do some two and three wide racing here which we couldn't' do at Syracuse because of the shape here"

So welcome to the newest chapter in the Super Dirt Week story. It could be the welcome change that was necessary to bring it to a new level. And if it becomes a permanent fixture at Oswego, here's betting that the memories become just as strong and vivid for a new generation to enjoy.

It was always dirt racing's biggest party, full of some of the heartiest, most passionate fans in the world. Oswego brings hope, that the racing will equal the intensity of the party, for good reason.

2016 Dirt Classic Preview; Unique Format and Invaders Set to Tangle at Lincoln

This coming Saturday Kasey Kahne presents the third annual Dirt Classic at the fabulous Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, Pa.  The event has grown over the previous two seasons, and this year should be no different as many outsider stars are planning on testing their luck against the vaunted Pennsylvania Posse in the second biggest race in Central Pennsylvania all season, and one of the biggest non-sanctioned races in the United States.  The event is a fan-friendly event, and with the unique format it is a must see show for any sprint car fan.

Pat Miller Photo

The Format - The Dirt Classic carries a very unique format with time trials setting the lineup for heat races.  From there things get interesting.  There are two sets of heat races with drivers being lined up heads up from time trials in the first set, and completely inverted in the second set.  Passing points are awarded and the top point getters are locked into the A-Main

Purse - The event pays a whopping $20,000-to-win, and a huge $1,000 just to start the A-Main event.

Now for who you should be looking out for!

The Favorite

Lance Dewease - At this point I don't see how anyone else can considered the favorite to win.  After teaming up with Donnie Kreitz Racing over the off-season, Dewease has been on an absolute tear.  They have won an amazing ten events this year.  That may not seem all that impressive until you look at the fact that they have only entered 20 events this season.  Yes you read that right.  They have won 50% of the events that have entered this season.  One of those wins was the Pennsylvania Speedweek event at Lincoln earlier this season.  They did not enter the World of Outlaws race at Lincoln.  Look for Dewease to be in contention all night long, and he is most definitely the favorite to bring home the big check.

Who else to watch for:

Pat Miller Photo

Greg Hodnett - Despite being a Port Royal regular, Hodnett has four victories at Lincoln this season which is an impressive feat for anyone, much less someone who hasn't ran there on a weekly basis.  Hodnett also leads Central Pennsylvania in victories with 21 victories, and is second only to Donny Schatz in winged sprint car wins in the nation.  It has been a great season for Hodnett, but he's still searching for that major victory to really establish his dominance, and the Dirt Classic at Lincoln could be the victory he's looking for.

Stevie Smith - Don't look now, but Stevie is getting hot.  After a slower than usual start to the season for the pilot of Fred Rahmer's No. 51s machine, the team has figured things out over the last couple of months.  An All Star victory at Port Royal the night before the Tuscarora 50 and a runner-up finish in the major Port Royal event the next night has shown the speed that Smith and his team have been looking for.  He also was the inaugural winner of the Dirt Classic, and a runner-up finisher in last year's event which means he knows how to get around Lincoln, and more importantly he knows how to score big points in this type of a format.

Pat Miller Photo

Brian Montieth - The Edge is having a little bit of a down year by his standards, but he is always fast at Lincoln, and more importantly he picked up the win in this event last season which shows that he has the speed to get the job done.

Pat Miller Photo

Danny Dietrich - Hot and cold would be a good way to describe Dietrich's season to this point.  When the Gary Kauffman-owned 48 is hot, then they are tough to beat, but when they've been cold they've been very average.  But Lincoln is Dietrich's base track and he has always seemed to get the job done there in big money shows.  He has beaten the World of Outlaws there twice, and the last time the All Stars were in town, Dietrich was in victory lane.  If Dietrich takes home the win in the Dirt Classic we shouldn't be all that surprised.

Terry McCarl - Of the invaders that are coming in to Lincoln this weekend, McCarl probably has the best chance to run good or possibly pick up the win.  A lot of people don't know this, but McCarl has picked up a victory at the Lincoln Speedway.  Years ago in an early season show, McCarl piloted the legendary Weikert's Livestock No. 29 machine to a victory at Lincoln.  So there is a little bit of experience there as the track is not brand new to McCarl like it will be for some of the invaders, but he is still facing an uphill battle in competing with the likes of Dewease, Hodnett and Smith.

James McFadden - The Kasey Kahne-owned No. 4 machine is going to be piloted by Australian James McFadden.  McFadden is a hard-charging driver who can get to the front when his car is on, and there should be no doubt that the Kahne No. 4 machine can get the job done.  McFadden had a successful sting in Pennsylvania earlier this season filling in for injured driver Pat Cannon in the Highlands No. 3 machine.  The stint even saw them qualify for the Knoxville Nationals.

Tim Kaeding - California native Tim Kaeding is one heck of a wheel man.  While he may not have the experience at Lincoln that you would need to win a show like this, he can adapt very quickly.  Don't be surprised if Kaeding runs very good this Saturday.

Pat Miller Photo

Alan Krimes - This year's Lincoln Speedway track champion should not be considered a sleeper, but Krimes is always a sleeper.  No matter how good he runs, and no matter how well he does against stiff competition, Krimes never seems to get the credit he so richly deserves for as good as he is.  Krimes winning the Dirt Classic might be a surprise to some, but it shouldn't be.

One thing is for sure.  The Dirt Classic at the Lincoln Speedway should be an excellent show.  Lincoln is known for great racing, and with the type of field that is expected this weekend at the big show, it should be no different.  If you can make it out there I would recommend this show to anyone.  I know I will be there.

This Week in DIRT: Marlar Delivers Tennessee Beatdown in Knoxville; Dr Johnson Halt's Sheppard's Dominance; Other Assorted Stories And Stuff To Read

So, you've come to that point of the year where you've started paying more attention to your fantasy football league than dirt racing! Shame on you! Not to worry though, we've got you covered on the major news throughout dirt nation over the weekend. It's our job at TDN, to help folks that had something take their focus off the sport for brief periods of time. get back on track, no matter how silly the reason might be! Marlar Delivers Tennessee Ass Whoopin in Knoxville

Ah yes, the Tennessee Ass Whoopin'. Not the one you may have been looking for. But nonetheless, it was great to see.  Veteran pilot Mike Marlar held another maker of Tennessee Ass Whoopin's, Mr. Scott Bloomquist to take home $40,000 at Knoxville Raceway on Saturday night in his first crown jewel victory of his career. After a good many close calls over the years, Marlar made the most of the weekend by putting one of the toughest fields in the country behind him in the win. It is always a pleasure watching a true outlaw take home a large paycheck, especially one that needs it just as much if not more than any sanction based driver. And Saturday night's performance was no exception.

Sweet Charged With Posession:

Yes. The recent mugshot image confirms this. Legendary race car builder Randy Sweet has been charged with possession of gray hair, green eyes, two ears, one nose...............and meth. There's tons we could say, but a lot we won't say since we're simply not aware of the whole story. However that having been said, if a problem may exist, we hope Mr. Sweet gets help and overcomes the demon so to speak as we would anybody that may have tried substances or been addicted.

Here's all that anybody really knows right here: Sweet Charged With Posession

Dr Johnson Finds Viagra; Beats Sheppard With Small Block To End Streak

Weedsport NY;

Part time tour announcer  Shane Andrews often says, "Grandpa....take your Viagra pill" during pre race festivities at many Super DIRTCar touring events . Dr. Danny Johnson was paying attention on Saturday night and made immediately for his pill box to take one in the hopes it would help him recover from a flaccid Friday night performance at Brewerton.

It worked.  Johnson looked reborn en route to his first tour victory of the season at Weedsport Speedway and in the process, halted points leader Matt Sheppard's four race winning streak where it was.

Johnson, perhaps more inspired since it was a race which very much looked as if it might actually end by his normal bedtime, even brought out the small block 358 engine for the event which didn't exactly sit well with Sheppard in the post race interview.

"First off, congrats to Danny, nobody needed it more than those guys. Unfortunately its bullsh_t that they let a 358 run with a 100 pound weight break against us so it was Danny's advantage, good for him, he had the advantage from the get go. Did I mention he had that advantage? That 358 advantage? But good for him, I mean he really did need it more than I did and he had us covered tonight.  Did I mention about that..."

Johnson remarked afterwards that he just really hoped the win may propel him to the cover of AARP magazine. When asked if he really meant "AARN" he replied "No, the first one"

Finish:

1. Danny Johnson 2. Matt Sheppard 3. Tim Fuller 4. Stewart Friesen 5. Larry Wight 6. Billy Decker
7. Mike Mahaney 8. Pat Ward 9. Justin Haers 10. Rob Bellinger 11. Mat Williamson 12. Chad Phelps

28. Vince Vitale 29. Gary Tomkins 30. Dave Allen 31. Alan Johnson

In other SDS action this weekend,  Matt Sheppard took care of business at his former Friday night home track winning his fourth tour event in a row. No small block sightings were reported.

Price Miller Takes Canadian Sprint Car Nationals

One of the most talked about sprint car drivers in terms of plans for the upcoming 2017 season, left another mark on 2016 as young, Indiana based wheel man Parker Price Miller etched his name on the record books with a convincing win in the annual Canadian Sprint Car Nationals at Ohsweken Speedway on Sunday night.

The win, in which Price Miller kept a stout field of 360 sprinters behind him, earned him $12,000 and opened even more eyes to what he has been accomplishing over the second half of the season. It was not Price Miller's first podium finish at the famed Ontario oval, Miller had finished third in a previous World of Outlaw feature last season.

It turns out Schatz stole the win away from Daryn Pittman on the last two laps en route to his 22nd year of the season.

But the Outlaws weren't quite ready to display the white flag on Saturday night as Joey Saldana registered his first tour win since June 22 at US 36 Raceway in Missouri with NSL drivers in attendance. Danny "The Dude" Lasoski took home NSL honors with a sixth place finish.

Wolfe Sets New Track Record and Destroys Field at Selinsgrove:
