30 drivers armed with 20 horsepower electric go karts and the will to win graced the concrete at Steel City Indoor Karting in the 2nd Annual TDN Night at the races. And when all was said and done, rookie Jake Dietz pulled off an eye opening victory in the thrilling 10 lap championship final.
Starting on the pole, Dietz would be challenged first by last year's runner up and Dietz's older brother Tyler, who never let the leader out of his sights in the early going. Last year's champion Aaron Easler started towards the back, but made his way through quickly in the early to make it a four kart battle with rookie Joey Koteles also in the mix. In the middle portion of the race, Easler made the pass for third and set his sights on Tyler Dietz whom he overtook with three laps to go. But out front, Jake Dietz drove hard and drove smart as he was able to keep his cool despite Easler's mounting pressure with time running out en route to the victory while Easler held off Tyler Dietz for the runner up spot.
Tyler Dietz took home the fastest lap of the night honors, turning a very quick 25.974. In other feature race action, late entrant Joey Zambotti was a decisive winner in feature race 3 while Bryan Wagner and Sam Eichelberger had no problems keeping the competition behind them in their respective main events.
The night, which featured live dj Brian "Mitch" Mitchell playing cued entrance songs for all drivers in advance of their qualifying and main event races as well as pizza, snacks and beverages and a Chinese auction, courtesy of TDN Sponsors R and R Racewear, Keyser/Integra Manufacturing and DirtOnDirt.com, was another success for the second year in a row.
Kim Carbone Gerber took home $120.00 in our first ever 50/50 drawing which helped raise $225 for the Wounded Warrior Project when combined with Chinese auction ticket sales.
Plans are already for the 2018 TDN Night at the Races/December classic.
