Satterlee Picks up $3,000 NDRL Northeast Chiller Thriller Victory at Mercer Raceway Park

Gregg Satterlee made a late race pass on Tim Fuller to seal a $3,000 payday and a NDRL Northeast Chiller Thriller victory on a beautiful Sunday afternoon in front of a large crowd at Mercer Raceway Park.

Satterlee made the winning move around Fuller in turns one and two with four laps remaining in the race.

“(Fuller) had a good car," Satterlee said. "I think when we got into lapped traffic it ultimately made the difference and we were able to get by him. We had a good car and it was a good race for sure.”

As Satterlee was able to make the pass and pull away Fuller’s car suffered a flat right rear tire that took him out of contention.

Fuller and Russ King paced the field to green for the 30 lap main event and King was able to get the jump early from the outside to take the early lead. He held onto the lead for six laps until Fuller was able to power around the outside of the 56 machine and take over the top spot.  They would battle for the lead in lapped traffic with Satterlee and Dan Stone right in tow until Stone’s motor expired bringing out the first caution on lap 14.

On the restart Satterlee was able to get by King for second and pursued Fuller until the caution came out on lap 18 for Doug Eck who stopped after contact with another car that ended his race.

On the restart Keith Barbara was able to make a couple of passes to move up past Mike Knight and King to move into third. After Satterlee made the winning pass on Fuller, and the 19 car suffered the flat tire, the Rochester Mills driver was able to pull away to secure the win. Barbara crossed the line in second followed by King, Knight and 10th place starting Max Blair.

For Barbara it was a solid race for his first start of the 2014 season.

“We had a brand new car out tonight,” Barbara said. “We qualified and raced well. A top five would have been good so a second place finish is great.”

King was happy with third.

“We ran at Attica last night and was seventh so we changed a bunch of stuff around on the car for today,” King said. “The car was like night and day compared to last night.  We’ll take it for how bad we were last night.”

King, as all of the top finishers did, commended the track crew for how the racing surface was.

“Frank Benic has been doing this for a long time and I’d say that was about as good a day race as you can have for dirt late models,” King said.

Satterlee’s win comes on the heels of a big week for the NDRL as they have three races beginning with the Penn National 50 at Pittsburgh’s Pennsylvania Motor Speedway on Thurdsay night. He will look to take the momentum into next week’s big events.

“These are three big races coming up for us next week that we are really looking forward to,” Satterlee said. “It was good to get a win here and we finished second at Hagerstown last night. Hopefully we can roll this into Pittsburgh and get a big win there.”

Satterlee set fast time and won his heat. King and Barbara won the other two heat races.

  1. Great report again the comments of the drivers about the first race of the year and track prep shows the passion for good racing the crew has.
