Driver Spotlight: Jason Fosnaught

Western, PA wheelman Jason Fosnaught is ready to get back in the game.  The veteran driver had been spending the first part of the season assisting fellow driver Greg Beach in his Renegades of Dirt modified campaign, but recently has turned his attention to his steel block late model program with his sights set on a second half schedule within the area.

Most of the pieces are in place for Fosnaught, the car, engine and most of the equipment is in place to make his run, but he's in search of some support to help defray the costs.

"To put a dollar value to what we are looking for, I’d say its minimal, Fosnaught said recently. "Something in the range of $2,000 to $3,000. We have the car, the engine, shocks, wheels and a small tire inventory. I’m hoping to come up with enough support to help with the cost of some extra parts, race fuel and added tire inventory. We’re looking for one main sponsor but will also entertain several smaller partners that would still be helpful to our needs. Our primary goal for the 2nd half of 2015 is to be competitive at the local speedways that run the steel block division. If we are competitive out of the box, our goal will shift toward winning a couple features. We will try to run approximately 12-15 events at Marion Center Speedway, Hesston Speedway and Bedford Speedway, etc."

While he was assisting Beach, Fosnaught kept his driving skills honed by substituting for Brett McDonald in the sportsman stock division at Lernerville Speedway one evening and took home a win in his only time in the car. His experience on dirt spans many divisions over an 18 year career and he's had good success at each level.

"This is my eighteenth year racing cars," he remarked. "I started in Strictly Stock at Challenger, moved into Sportsman Stocks at Lernerville and eventually made my way to Crate and Steel Block Late Models at various speedways around the area. I also have experience in E-Mods and Micro Sprints and a win in a Three Quarter Late Model. Winning one of the most prestigious stock car races in Western Pa. is currently my biggest accomplishment. I was given the opportunity to drive my brother’s car last year at the Little Guys Nationals and we took full advantage of that by leading all 30 laps and taking home the big prize. Also, I’d be lying if I didn’t mention that I was really proud to pick up a feature win this year for Larry & Brett McDonald in their #25 Sportsman Stock at Lernerville. Two for two in the last two attempts in stock cars…very proud of those accomplishments!"

But aside from his on the track accomplishments, Fosnaught can appreciate what it means to be a true partner with his sponsors, and embraces the public relations duties that come along.

"I'm willing and have experience with doing these things for previous sponsors. I appreciate their help and love to repay them in any way that they need or expect. We really try to work with our partners to help market their product to the loyal racing fan base. And we know that sometimes by just having a meet and greet at their facility, they’ll bring in new customers and hopefully we’ll grow our racing family…and their business."

Fosnaught also brings the necessary passion it takes to make true commitment to the sport, the standard and mantra that he lives by with regards to his racing.

I’ve told my wife many times this year that racing is what defines me. Whether I’m at work or with family, racing is the one thing that I’m always talking, sometimes debating, about. I’ve been going to the race track since I was about six years old. There’s nothing else I work harder to be able to do. “There’s a difference between interest and commitment. When you’re interested in doing something, you do it only when it’s convenient. When you’re committed to something, you accept no excuses: only result!” My wife and I purchased our dream home a couple years ago and the reality of being an adult is that you have to set certain priorities for your family. That being said, the expendable income that always allowed me to fund my own operation has decreased. I’ve always tried to foot the bill for my hobby but it’s been tough to get things together this year. We have a lot of the pieces in place but just need that little extra to put a competitive race car on track."

So with a little more support, a racer's wish to get back in the game will come true, and when it comes to drivers, one couldn't ask for much more at the local/regional than Jason Fosnaught.

A New Breed of Promoter

This past Sunday I took in the Pennsylvania Speedweek show at the Path Valley Speedway, or the #PartyAtThePath, and after taking in the show last year, and the show in April promoted by the same group, I have to say that this was by far this promotional group.  Fred Rahmer Promotions is a breath of fresh air into dirt track racing, and a much appreciated group that is doing everything right for the fans.  And this past Sunday's event put it over the top.  At noon Fred threw a party just down the road from the race track with live music, driver interaction, free food, and best of all, free beer.  And he also brought in MRN personality Steve Post, co-host of Winged Nation, to announce the event.  All of this came with your ticket to the race that night, one that was well worth the price of admission.
Fred Rahmer took time to talk to us and take a picture with us

Let me tell you a story.  When me and my crew arrived at Path Valley we began to walk down to the party when a guy in a Rahmer Promotions shirt stopped in his truck to pick us up and give us a ride down there because of the walk.  As soon as we pulled in Fred Rahmer himself greeted us with a beer in his hand and encouraged us to go grab some food and a beer.  He then talked to us for a while about where we were from and told racing stories from his trips to Winchester Speedway, which is my home track in Virginia.  He then told us about the Legends race he is promoting on August 23rd at the Lincoln Speedway where such past legends as Doug Wolfgang, Keith Kauffman, Todd Shaffer, Lynn Paxton, Steve Smith, Steve Siegel, Kenny Adams, and Steve Stambaugh will be racing 410 sprint cars against one another

In a racing world where there are a ton of different options it is nice to see a promoter that is doing everything he can to give back to the fans, and to make them feel appreciated for showing up to the event and spending their money on the show that is taking place.
Me and the guys with Steve Post

As a driver, Fred Rahmer was a hall of famer, and whether you liked him or hated him, you always had a reaction.  He put butts in the seats and was one of, if not the best driver in the history of central Pennsylvania sprint car racing.  He was the most prolific driver in the history of Pennsylvania Speedweek bringing home the most wins in Speedweek history, and an astounding 13 championships during the week stretch.  He was a multi-time track champion at many different track, and is the all-time wins leader at both Williams Grove and Lincoln Speedways.

And while many people may have rooted against Rahmer as a driver, there is nobody that is rooting against him as a promoter.  I have yet to talk to one person who does not think that Fred Rahmer is an excellent promoter and you won't hear a bad word about the man come out of my mouth about his promotional skills.  The man genuinely cares about whether or not you show up to his races, and he will tell you so.

Look, it's nice to know that there is a promoter out there that is breathing fresh air into the promoting game in central Pennsylvania, and with the legendary status that Fred Rahmer has in the area he will only continue to grow his promotional business and continue to give back to the fans and drivers alike.  I would encourage anybody who is a race fan to frequent any show put on by Fred Rahmer Promotions.  He will thank you for coming, and will give you your money's worth.  What else could you really ask for?

The TDN Weekly Super Late Model Power Poll: Week 8

Hey there race fans. You ain't tripping, I did skip a week of these because rain and the Firecracker, but I'm back this week. Rain was still very much an issue this past weekend, as Dog Hollow was the only scoring track to get a show in (and they had two regular weekly features, so they both count) this week, and last week Lenerville and Eriez got their shows in (Dog Hollow ran, too, but it was a special, so it didn't count either), for the only points that will be added to these totals since the last installment.

I know, I know, Lernerville got two of three features in, but by the rules of this poll, those WoO features do not count. I'm trying to get a feel for the best weekly racer in Pennsylvania with this deal. That said, I was at Lernerville, and was impressed by the locals. They weren't taking any mess, particularly Jared Miley. I'm already looking forward to September, and my prediction of Jared Miley shocking the world by winning the Firecracker just might come through.

Anyways, I digress. Let's get to the reason ya'll read these things. The rankings. I've added a running tally of feature wins that count towards this poll. After each driver's total points, there will be a star for each scoring feature they have won.

1. Clate Copeman, 30**** points. Clate scored his points this week with a third and a fourth in Dog Hollow's two features Friday/

2. Mike Blose, 27** points. Mike also scored his points at Dog Hollow, amazingly enough with a third and fourth in their two features.

3. Scott Rhodes, 17* points. Scott had a fantastic night at Dog Hollow and won one of the features and got a second in the other one Friday night for his points this week.

4. DJ Troutman, 16* points. DJ didn't score any points this week.

4. Alex Ferree, 16* points. Alex won the feature at Lernerville last Friday for his points this week.

6. Dylan Yoder, 15* points. Dyaln went scoreless this week, too.

6. Jim Yoder, 15* points. Jim also put up a goose egg this week.

8. Dwayne Tanneyhill, 14* points. Dwayne scored a point this week with a fifth in one of Dog Hollow's features (and got sixth in the other one)

8. Russ King, 14** points. Russ' points this week came from his second at Lernerville last week.

8. Jeff Rine, 14** points. Jeff also struck out this week.

And that's the first ten names on the spreadsheet I keep for this poll. Let's hope we get some racing in the week so this poll can get exciting again, ya know?

ATTN: Firecracker Pickem Suspended

Attention all 150 Firecracker 100 Pickem players...

The rain that washed out almost all racing in the Northeast on Saturday sent home 45 drivers, many officials/staff workers, and thousands of fans and campers from Lernerville Speedway. In addition to that, it threw the popular TDN Firecracker 100 Pickem into limbo.

After group deliberation, it has been decided that the contest will continue on as normal. No changes need to be made on behalf of the players. All picks will remain and info stored until the Firecracker 100 resumes on Saturday, September 5th.

Likewise, all prizes will be shoved into storage until our contest is complete. So don't throw a fit (or anything else). We got you taken care of. And for the majority of you who struggled heavily through the first two days, hopefully these 2+ months of downtime are more than enough for all of your side-bets to be forgotten.

Right now we have a 4-way tie for the lead and there are 16 players within 30 points. An even greater amount lay within striking distance, and September 5th might be the day that they pounce. If you're looking for a full rundown of the standings, click here.

We'll pick right back up on September 5th from where we left off. In the meantime, we hope you have a dirt-filled and rain-less summer!

Weekend Scoreboard- Raise your hand if you weren't rained out!

In the east, it was another weekend from hell weather wise as the Rain Parade Series racked up wins at many tracks which included the Firecracker 100 at Lernerville, a World of Outlaw Sprint Show in Iowa, the last ASCoC Ohio Sprint Week date at Fremont, 80% of all Big Block/358 Modified Action, two UMP Summernational dates and numerous regional late model races.  But..there was some activity this weekend and we've got it for you here on one page! We'll add to it as well, as soon as we can find something other than powerboat racing results, so check back often

Firecracker Pickem Standings: Night 2

After another fast and furious night of racing, the updated standings for our unique Firecracker 100 Pickem are available.

You'll notice the four-way tie for the top spot. Each of those entrants have picked the same 5 drivers. Fortunately they all have a different answer to the tiebreaker question (how many yellows in the 100 lap finale). If a tie occurs after the third and final night, whoever picks the right amount of cautions, or is the closest, gets the win. If that still does not decide the victor, then we will simply go to who entered first.

Firecracker Night 2 Recap: Junghans Earns Breakthrough Victory in Dominating Fashion

Preliminary Night Two of the Firecracker 100 at Lernerville saw another racy, wide surface and a first time winner in victory lane. Chase Junghans led green to checkered in the nonstop 30 lap event. The Manhattan, Kansas driver went unchallenged as he raced away from the field in his Capital Race Car via the pole position.

"It feels great, especially with all these great drivers behind me", Junghans said following the victory. "It really helped starting up front for sure. Hopefully we can build off of it and get a win tomorrow or at least come out with a solid finish. "

Behind Junghans, the racing throughout the field once again saw drivers using the multi-groove surface throughout all 30 laps.  Chub Frank drew the outside pole and settled into second in the early stages.  Scott Bloomquist overtook Frank for the runner up spot on lap 9 with a power move going into turns three and four.

Thursday's winner Shane Clanton wasted no time in moving to the front from his seventh starting spot.  Clanton made his way by Frank for 3rd on lap 11.  Tim McCreadie engaged in a battle for several laps with Chubzilla for fourth towards the halfway point. McCreadie found speed on the outside to momentarily take the position, but would again giveway to Frank by lap 20.

Up front, Junghans primarily remained on the bottom grove of the speedway as he effectively worked lap traffic.  Clanton kept pace with Bloomquist as the race hit 5 to go, but neither driver had anything for Junghans, who maintained over a half straightaway lead.

Bloomquist, who did not compete Thursday night, settled for the runner up spot while Clanton rounded out the podium. Frank and Davey Johnson also scored top five finishes.   McCreadie held off Jared Miley for 6th.  Gregg Satterlee, Austin Hubbard and Rick Eckert finished 8th through 10th.

The win for Junghans was his first ever on the Outlaws tour and it just happened to come on one of the biggest stages of the year.

"It will settle in eventually", Junghans said. "Hopefully we got the monkey off our back and we can keep running good and keep it up throughout the rest of the year."

Amain Top 10:

1 Chase Junghans
2 Scott Bloomquist
3 Shane Clanton
4 Chub Frank
5 Davey Johnson
6 Tim McCreadie
7 Jared Miley
8 Gregg Satterlee
9 Austin Hubbard
10 Rick Eckert

Four heats again set the stage for the evening. Heat #1 saw Davey Johnson drive under Josh Richards for a convincing victory. McCreadie and Russ King finished 2nd and 3rd, while Richards faded to 4th in the final transfer spot.

The action picked up in heat #2 at the front, as Frankie Heckenast made contact with Austin Hubbard going into the first turn. However, Hubbard made a very good save that allowed him to drive back by Heckenast following a restart. Hubbard went on to victory, but briefly lost the lead to Satterlee in the middle of the race. Frank went on to finish 2nd, while Satterlee faded to 3rd.

Heat #3 saw another dominating victory for Clanton. Junghans punched his ticket into the redraw by narrowly holding off Miley for 2nd.

Bloomquist raced past WoO rookie Brandon Overton to claim the 4th and final heat.

Shane Clanton Remains Hot with Firecracker Night One Victory.

Shane Clanton continued his hot streak on the World of Outlaws Late Models tour with a victory in night one of the Firecracker 100 at the Lernerville Speedway. After not competing in last year's Firecracker 100 main event after being disqualified in a heat event, Clanton expressed in victory lane he is looking for redemption this year by sweeping the weekend. The victory was the seventh on the tour this season for the Zebulon, Georgia driver.

PA drivers Jared Miley and Davey Johnson were originally set to the lead the field to green.  However, after consecutive early starts by both drivers, Clanton and fast timer Mason Zeigler inherited front row starting spots.  When the green waved for good, Clanton was able to race to the early lead, with Zeigler and Miley close behind.

Throughout the first dozen laps, Miley was keeping pace with Clanton but could not find a way around the #25 machine.  On lap 10, Miley pulled even with Clanton coming off turn two, but Clanton raced back on the outside to maintain the lead.

Lap 12 saw lap traffic come into play, which allowed Clanton to extend his lead over Miley.  Further back in the field, Darrell Lanigan and Rick Eckert each were making a charge to the front.  A four car battle for 3rd ensued between Lanigan, Zeigler, Eckert and Johnson as the race hit the halfway mark.  Eckert, who started 12th, made quick work of all three as the York, PA driver rolled the bottom groove to take 3rd on lap 17.

Eckert then began to close on Miley for 2nd in the following laps, as Clanton maintained a near straightaway lead.

On lap 26, Eckert charged past Miley in traffic to take the runner up spot.  Eckert made up significant ground in the final laps, as Clanton begun to lose some speed coming off the corners. However, Eckert's bid for victory would fall short by 1.361 seconds.  Clanton led all 30 laps in a caution free race following the two initial called back starts.

Miley came home with a strong 3rd place showing, Lanigan took 4th, while Eric Wells charged late to complete the top five. Rounding out the top ten were Johnson, Austin Hubbard, Zeigler, Chase Junghans and Chub Frank.

Mother Nature did its best to spoil the party with afternoon rains, but the track crew did a superb job, providing a smooth, fast track throughout the evening. Four action packed heats set the stage for the evening among the forty five cars in attendance. Zeigler, Frank, Clanton and Lanigan claimed wins. The action is set to continue Friday with another $6,000 to win 30 lap preliminary event.

Appreciate the Dominance

Just the other day I was sitting around thinking about how impressive it is that in both Sprint Car and Late Model racing right now there are two drivers that are completely dominant in an era that it is incredibly hard to do so.  Donny Schatz in the Sprints and Jonathan Davenport in the Late Models.

I know, I know, we've all heard the stories of past legends that dominated the sport at one time or the other.  In the Sprints the most famous example is Steve Kinser who won 45 or so World of Outlaws races in a year in the late 80's, and Scott Bloomquist in the Late Models, but in an era where everyone gets to buy a competitive car and passing it as a premium at a lot of racetracks, what Schatz and Davenport are doing currently is just staggering.

Take a look at Donny Schatz's numbers.  If you do not think that Schatz is the best Sprint car driver in the world right now, you're fooling yourself.  It's only the end of June and Schatz currently has 16 World of Outlaws feature victories.  Yea, you read that right, 16.  He also has 28 top 5 finishes and 35 top 10 finishes.  The guy never breaks and no matter where he starts in the field he is coming to the front.  I was at the Knoxville Nationals in 2013 when he came out of the B-Main to win the A-Main on Saturday night.  Coming from 21st in the biggest Sprint car race in the country to take the win is indeed impressive, and it doesn't look like he will be slowing down anytime soon.  With the Kings Royal and the Knoxville Nationals looming in the near future, the smart money would be on Schatz.

In the Late Models pure dominance like Schatz's sprint dominance hasn't been seen in a while.  Sure Scott Bloomquist, Billy Moyer, and Jimmy Owens have went on stretches in recent years that were incredibly impressive, but Davenport strung together 9 straight victories prior to running 3rd in the Lucas Oil event at Smoky Mountain this past Saturday, and that was after mechanical issues in time trials forced him to start last in his heat race.  He also took the win in the Dirt Late Model Dream and took wins in his preliminary feature the previous two nights before the feature night at Eldora.  He's on a different planet right now then the rest of the drivers in the sport and looks like it'll be a while before the others get caught up.

What Donny Schatz and Jonathan Davenport are doing right now is so impressive that it deserves attention, and while Davenport is garnering a lot of fans at the moment due to this driving style and the fact that he has taken the attention away from Bloomquist, Schatz has been booed for years as the dominant figure in sprint car racing.  Go to a World of Outlaws event in Central Pennsylvania if you want to see a fan reaction with tons of boos for a driver.  They despise Schatz up there.  But we all have to give credit where credit is due.  There are a ton of good drivers and a ton of good teams in our sport at this moment, and to see just how dominant Schatz and Davenport have been in recent months is staggering.

A Firecracker 100 Preview or Something

Hey there race fans. Coming up Thursday night is the beginning of one of the biggest race weekends in dirt late model racing, up at TDN's home track, Lenerville, the Firecracker 100. So what I'm gonna do is put a small preview together so you'll know what to expect if you haven't been before, plus some bonus predictions at the end. Now, let's get to the meat and potatoes of this thing.

Who: There's likely to be around 60 of the very best late model drivers in the country. I say this because that's pretty much the car count every year. I'm not into putting driver lists together, because shit happens and dudes don't show, or dudes that weren't planning on racing do show. There will be all the WoO fellas, some other national touring level dudes, a bunch of regional guys and the guys we see at Lernerville week in and week out.

What: Three days of late model racing, culminating with the running of the 100 lap Firecracker 100 Saturday night for a cool 30k to win. There will be a full show each night, with time trials, heats, consis and a 30 lap feature for 6k on Thursday and Friday night. Saturday night, the format will change a bit. There's no qualifying, the heats are lined up from the drivers' best finish Thursday or Friday night, but then after those heats and b-mains, the bros who didn't qualify  for the big show get a 30 lap feature of their own for 3k. As an added bonus, there's various things to do around the speedway during the weekend, including live music after the Thursday and Friday programs.

Why: Why not? Racing is fun, yo.

Where: Lernerville Speedway, Sarver, Pennsylvania. It's a high banked 4/10  oval on Route 356 in Sarver, Pennsylvania about 10 miles south of the small city of Butler, Pennsylvania. If you need more information about the track, you can go to their website here.

When: There's a bunch of stuff going on all week. I'd try to list it all and stuff, but I'd rather let Lernerville do it, because they're smarter than I am. A schedule can be found here, and ticket info can be found here

How: With a lot of planning and a great race track, I suppose.

Now that I've got that stuff out of the way, I'm gonna tell you who will win the race, who won;t win the race, and which guy could shock the world. Then some other, silly predictions.

Who will win:

Josh Richards. He's heating up after being off for just about all of last year, and he has an absolute ton of laps at Lernerville his years in a late model. Plus, the last time he ran the Firecracker, in  2013, he had as dominant a weekend as I've ever seen in any kind of racing, sweeping the weekend, when the track conditions were completely different all three nights.

Who won't win:

Darrell Lanigan. Yes, yes, I know. He won the thing last year. But 2015 has been very., very different for Darrell. He hasn't won with the WoO yet. He's just off, by his standards. I don't think he's suddenly going to figure it out this weekend, either. He randomly showed up to a weekly show about a month ago. He ran third, and in a few more laps, would have been been fourth, passed by two locals. It just isn't his year.

Who might shock the world:

Jared Miley. He's always very good at Lernerville, and in 2012, was clearly the fastest car on the track in the second half of the 100. If he can manage to qualify near the top, the possibility of him running up front for all 100 laps is very real.

Some other predictions:

I will eat roughly twelve pork chop sammiches in three days.
Modified legend Sammy Beavers will be in attendance, but just as a fan.
Rain will make an appearance during the weekend. It won't cancel the racing, though. It'll just make the track have a foot high cushion that night.
All them pork chop sammiches will give me pretty raunchy gas. You might not want to sit near me.
Scott Bloomquist will show up late.
Tim McCreadie will win a preliminary night. That thread on 4M about him will get retarded.

And that's pretty much it. I hope this was helpful, and I hope you have a crapload of fun if you go. If you happen to see one of us TDN staff, say what's up. We don't bite. Unless you're pork chop sammich. Then you'll get bit.

Fans were treated to a racy track and a little extra on the line as Rex King Jr, Carl Bowser, Alex Ferree and Joe Kelley all earned starting spots to some very big races by way of their feature wins.

DIEHL Automotive Group Modifieds:

Rex King Jr came into the night hungry for a win at the action track, and he left completely satisfied. The defending champion put a stout field of modifieds that included Ransomville invader Erick Rudolph, behind him en route to his second win of the season.

Points leader Mat Williamson started on the pole of the 25 lap feature, but it was week five winner Garrett Krummert who sprinted out to the early lead, rocketing around Williamson on the first set of turns.  Krummert and Williamson then proceeded to duel for the lead in the early stages of the race with Williamson working down low while behind them, King Jr began stalking both of them, charging from his sixth starting spot to third on the opening lap.

The field got re stacked on lap six when Shawn Kozar brought out the first caution of the race and on the ensuing restart Williamson put himself in front with a solid restart as King Jr was able to get underneath Krummert to take the second spot. Rudolph would then make it a three car battle for the win as he made quick work of the competition and surged forward from his 10th starting spot to third. The caution flag waved again on lap nine and King jr capitalized on the restart as the good jump enabled him to take the lead away from Williamson.  The eventual winner would find himself in lapped traffic at the lap 15 mark while behind him Williamson and Rudolph engaged in a battle for second. The two could not reel in King Jr for the remainder of the contest as he took home his second feature victory of the season, a win which gave him a starting spot in the modified portion of the Steel City Stampede in October.

"The track was good, it was racy and fast," King Jr said in victory lane. "We got a good start there and I could see Mat was coming and luckily we got him."

Peoples TWP Sprints:

Carl Bowser dominated the sprint feature with a performance that saw him nearly lap half the field Friday night. The defending champion made it look easy on the way to his third victory of 2015 as the rest of the field simply tried to stay in the same zip code.

Scott Priester took the lead on the initial green flag while Bowser and points leader AJ Flick immediately went to work on running him down. Bowser would get there first, courtesy of a lap two restart that saw him make his way around Priester with Ralph Spithaler and Brent Matus in tow. Flick took a longer route to the front, and in the time it took for him to get around Spithaler and Matus, Bowser had checked out to an insurmountable lead. Bowser made use of a well handling car and a top side that was much to his liking in establishing a half track lead on Priester.

As Bowser flew around the surface, the only battle to watch was the developing one for the final podium spots as Priester would not go away quietly.   Ed Lynch Jr was able to move forward from his 8th starting spot to join the fray on lap 15. Lynch passed the third running Spithaler and Priester on back to back laps to take the second spot and Flick followed suit just two laps later to join the top three.  But, barring a caution or an insane amount of lapped traffic, Bowser simply couldn't be caught, and on this night, whatever lapped traffic that did emerge was passed with ease by the eventual race winner. With the win, Bowser locked himself into a starting spot for the World of Outlaws Don Martin SIlver Cup in July.

"I thought we got hung up in lapped traffic with four to go and I though surely that someone ought to be catching me," Bowser stated. "I take my hat off to the guys that work on the car, I just come in and tell them what I think the car is doing and then tell them what I need it to do and they just make it all work. You're always worried that the car might go away, that's the hard thing about starting up front, you just have to go by feel and hope for the best."

Alex Ferree may have had a car as dominant as Bowser's, but he'd have to survive a large number of restarts to collect his second victory of the season.

Ferree started on the pole alongside perenniel favorite Russ King, and he bolted out out to the early lead while King and Kenny Schaltenbrand took up the two spots behind him in th early going.  Ferree was best around the top of the speedway while King Jr looked to make up ground in the low groove in the early going.  Ferree would encounter lapped traffic on lap seven as he sliced between Herman Bertollini and John Garvin Jr on the back stretch, narrowly avoiding disaster.

Then at the lap eight mark, Garvin Jr would slow to bring out the first of many yellow on the night. The cautions took their toll on last week's winner, Michael Norris and Mike Pegher Jr as the former would succumb to a flat tire and the latter would survive a car that had significant damage to the left side body panels.  Pegher Jr would keep the car in the race and actually at a high level despite being caught up in a multi car jam up on the front stretch.

The yellow flags came fast and furious as the laps wound down and on the subsequent restarts, King and Schaltenbrand would both test Ferree, especially in turns one and two, but once Ferree got off the second corner, he established himself as the man to beat. Pegher Jr was able to challenge Schaltenbrand for the third spot but was not able to stay ahead of him at the end of 25 laps.  With the win, Ferree punched his ticket to the next week's Firecracker 100 for the World of Outlaw Late Models.

" It's so hard when you start up front and get out to the early lead," Ferree explained. "When you see King and Kenny and Pegher and start wondering to yourself, how close are they? But it feels great to know we're in the Firecracker, hopefully this will take some pressure off of us."

Joe Kelley took the lead on lap two of the sportsman feature and never looked back to collect his 49th career victory at Lernerville. If he could have, he would have seen a determined Jeff Miller who's performance was nothing short of surprising to say the least.

The veteran stock  driver shocked the crowd with a heat win early in the going, and was a force to be reckoned with. Kelley moved into the lead from his fourth starting spot while behind him, Miller had his hands full of formidable competition in the likes of the red hot Corey McPherson, Terry Young and Jim Fosnaught. The first caution flag came out on lap six when Fosnaught appeared to have something break.  On the restart, Kelly jumped out to a sizable lead, however McPherson shuffled back to sixth, and wouldn't be heard from again until the end of the race.

Following a lap 8 restart, 2014 rookie of the year Aaron Easler started to mount a charge towards the front as Miller held firmly in second while Kelley set a torrid pace with the lead while Young held down the third spot.  McPherson and Easler would then engage in a battle for fourth as McPherson took his familiar spot in the high groove, but Easler was able to keep him at bay until lap 16 when McPherson switched lines and made his way around to take the positition.

Miller and Young then put on a terrific battle for second in the waning laps while  Easler bobbled lap 17.  McPherson was then able to get around Miller and Young to climb to third, but a lap 18 caution set the table for one last restart and one last chance for Kelley to slip up on the way to what looked to be a certain victory.  Kelley kept calm though and smoothly drove away towards the checkered flag while Young and McPherson rounded out the podium.  Kelley earned a starting spot in the sportsman stock portion of the annual Autumn Motive Fest in September.

"We got in a wreck on the first lap of our heat race and if it would have been a regular night we'd have started in the back," Kelly said. "The bottom was there tonight, and I was able to make it work. Terry Young is so strong up top so I was concerned there towards the end, and Miller was running really good too so I really didn't know what was going to happen."
