2nd Annual TDN Night At The Races Offers A Great Time For All

The Inaugural TDN Night At The Races was such a success from the amount of drivers, to the enthusiasm all attendees displayed and so forth, that it was clear to see it needed to become an annual event.

The evening, which includes a night of kart racing with area drivers and fans, makes it's return in 2017 this Thursday night. We will once again have a conference room all to ourselves where we can mingle, enjoy some food, and this year, partake in a Chinese Auction with prizes furnished from our sponsors and a 50/50 with all proceeds going to Wounded Warriors Project.

Last year, Aaron Easler held off a hard charging Tyler Dietz to claim the first championship in a thrilling final feature battle that saw many lead changes. This year, our champion will receive a custom trophy, and also new for 2017, there will be a $25 Visa gift card awarded to the fastest time of the night!

The night is free for the drivers and fans who wish to watch and cheer on their favorite drivers, courtesy of our event hosts, Steel City Indoor Karting!

Here's more on what drivers and fans can expect.....

Schedule of Events:

What Drivers Can Expect:

Driver's from last year's event can expect a repeat performance of the thrilling races we were entertained by. It's pretty much the same format and the track will feature the same layout. Rookie drivers are in for a real treat as the competition is extremely fun and competitive! Here are some things to keep in mind and some helpful hints to help your success.

  • During your qualifying races, try to keep spread out as possible. Remember, you're racing the clock, not each other! Give each other room and respect out there. If you are being approached and a pass attempt is made, please be courteous and allow the driver to pass, you're not playing defense here, it will help your time to just focus on your performance. And if you are passed, remember it's not a race, use the 8 laps to practice, get a feel for the kart, and try to use the line of the person that passed you, they might be showing you something.

  • Please respect your fellow drivers and the karts! We don't need any injuries or bad feelings here. Steel City allows to do this for free for all of you as long as we are respectful. This is fun and that's what we want it to keep being.  Anybody who is too aggressive will get a warning, if it persists it's a DQ.  Keep in mind however, there will be contact at times, this is unavoidable as the turns are tight. Your karts have slide glides around the entire kart for such occurrences. Please be courteous when passing other drivers.

  • Keep your cart underneath you by controlling your speed! If you come into a turn too hot and realize it too late, you're going to spin. Your best bet is to start cautious in your qualifying race and get a feel for the braking points, then learn to oscillate accelerator and brake pedals to keep up your momentum. The key to speed is keeping momentum, avoiding slide glide contact with barriers while finding areas of the track where you can be faster. One mistake will take an entire lap to recapture your momentum. Driver smarter, not harder.

  • You will be in a feature race after your qualifying race. These will be lined up by qualifying times. That does not mean there won't be passing however. Remember, we time trial on a track with different amounts of heat and different amounts of rubber. Rubber, black marks, will mean traction and by feature time, there will be some laid down. In other words if driver x is fastest in heat one, they will be looking at an entirely different track by the time the features come around.  Features will be utilizing a Formula One type standing grid start. Once the green flag drops, use offense (no punting), but there will be contact, use defense, steal someone's line and get to the front and stay there! Good Luck!

  • When you see Steel City Karting staff members, be sure to thank them! We are very grateful for their assistance and the fact that they do a great job.  Be sure to ask about forming leagues and be sure to tell everyone about what a great place it really is. Word of mouth advertising for them is huge!
The Karts:

The Karts are Sodi RTX and have a 20 horsepower electric motor. Most gas karts use 5 to 9 horsepower. Every bit of torque is available immediately from the time you press the accelerator. Each kart has a four point adjustable harness and are designed to not allow for driver clothing to become entangled. See the kart picture below. Of course our karts will be black and gold.

What Fans Can Expect:

Fans can expect an amazing time! There will be a Chinese Auction, 50/50, and a live DJ plus Pizza from Fox's Pizza Den, snacks, drinks. It's completely free for fans to attend and allows for fans to talk to their favorite drivers in a relaxed and fun environment with a little competitive edge. Be sure to take pictures and share the fun on social media! And, the racing is a blast! Fans were standing and screaming as the laps wound down in our final main event!
