The world of dirt was in full swing for many of us this weekend as moderate temperatures and a fuller schedule allowed for some great racing in select areas of the country! But you missed it! You could have dvr'd the college basketball games you know. You could have explained to your wife how you don't need to go to every single third cousin's wedding. You could have not fell face first into the pretzel bowl at your local tavern because you can't hold your liquor. But you indulged in non dirt racing related activities anyway. For a lot of us, there's a free pass if you're located hours away from a track that was running. But for the rest of you who were near the track and couldn't make it, shame on you! However, these things happen from time to time, and it's our job to catch you back up on what you missed. Here's this Week in DIRT!
A Sad Day
Before we begin with our normal program, we'd like to pass along our condolences on a very sad piece of news that broke our collective hearts here at TDN. Grant Junghans lost his battle with cancer this weekend and is gone from us much too soon. He was a very talented wheelman and rising USMTS star who could have been amazing to watch climb through the ranks in the Super Late Model world. We are devastated to hear this news and our thoughts and prayers are with his family in their time of need. Rest in Peace Grant...you will forever be missed.
The Connecticut Yankee Heats Up/ Schatz's Shots Cancelled at Thunder bowl
39 cars entered and one car left victorious as everyone in attendance looked for life beyond Thunder bowl (Tulare, CA) Saturday night. The Connecticut Yankee in the Outlaw Court, Mr David Gravel managed to hold off a hard charging Shane Stewart for 35 laps to collect his first win of 2016 and first win his new team at CJB Motorsports. In other news, Donny Schatz spoiled the "Schatz's Shots" party for many of us with his reluctance to join the Amain field Saturday after failing to make the show via the "Sucks To Be You/Lord Jesus Please Let Me Transfer" Mother of all last chance showdowns. Had he started in the rear, he may have passed as many as 15 cars which would have meant 15 shots of your favorite liquor, but instead, he left our glasses empty. Thanks Donny!
Turning back to Gravel, this weekend's win coupled with a strong second place last weekend in Arizona, point to him getting used to his new surroundings. That could spell trouble for many as the season goes along, as we've been waiting for him to take yet another step towards the top echelon of the industry. We may be witnessing that time soon...

Perrego Takes Series Opener
The big blocks returned to action this weekend at Georgetown Speedway (DE) as Brett Deyo's Short Track Super Series took to the dirt on Saturday night, ushering a new era for the speedway. If you'd read our own Daylon Barr's Big Block Futures article, you'd have known that Anthony Perrego will be one to watch in 2016, coming off three years of great progression in the weekly ranks. Perrego was a man on a mission, coming from eighth starting spot and overtaking Andy Bachetti for the $5,000 plus winner's share.

Bloomquist Delivers 1st Tennessee Ass Whipping of 2016; Madden Runs Down Competition
He may have done it in Florida, but nothing feels quite like a Tennessee ass whipping, unless it's actually in Tennessee. Scott Bloomquist put a fairly stout field of late models behind him in the $15,000 to win Tennessee Tipoff at Smoky Mountain Speedway on Saturday night.
Of course he may have had a rougher time of accomplishing it had Chris Madden not made contact with one of Bloomquist's crew members who happened to be riding a mini bike in the pits following a heat race on Friday night. Madden was tossed for the weekend for the incident, but was able to haul to Dixie Speedway (GA) on Saturday to collect a $5,000 to win check in an unsanctioned event that featured Shane Clanton in attendance as well. "If he just wanted the bike, he should have said something," Bloomquist said regarding the incident. "I'd gladly have given him one, it's not like we don't go back, we've been going to ice cream socials, and bingo games for years so the hard feelings are difficult to deal with right now, although had he been here, he'd have felt the wrath of my Tennessee ass beating."

Forler Shines at Canyon
Washington state native Logan Forler held off Dusty Zomer and wired the Lucas Oil ASCS sprinters Saturday night at Speedway Park (AZ). It was the second southwestern tour win for Forler who leads that section of the points chase currently.
