Gravel Scores Against WoO, Named Driver of the Week

David Gravel parked the Tiner 83SA in WoO victory lane at Merced Speedway
David Gravel. What's not to like about the kid? He's got a great heart, an inspiring passion and an ambition to succeed. Did I mention that he can wheel a sprint car too? It took the Connecticut native just six starts with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series this season to reach WoO victory lane for just the third time in his career. Gravel's impressive night also consisted of setting quick time and breaking the track record. En route to earning the TDN Driver of the Week award, Gravel moved forward quickly from his 5th place starting spot to take the lead on lap 25 and hold on for the remaining 15 laps.

Full press release:

You can see highlights of Gravel's feature win here:

We also interviewed David Gravel earlier this year, you can read up on it right here:

Honorable Mentions:
Patrick Stasa:
The 29 year old Kingman, Kans. native captured his first career ASCS National Tour win Saturday night to conclude the rain-delayed weekend at Devil's Bowl. Stasa hasn't won an ASCS Regional race to date, but that didn't stop him from leading all 30 laps en route to the victory.

Billy Moyer:
The 56 year old veteran got the job done once again. This time Moyer was victorious with the World of Outlaws Late Model Series at the I-30 Speedway in his home state of Arkansas. The $10,150 victory was Moyer's 41st career with the series and he is quickly approaching 800 career wins. An interesting note: Billy Moyer has already won a race with each of the three major touring series in the country (Lucas-2, NDRL, WoO)

Rodney Sanders:
Sanders had about as an impressive weekend as an open-wheel modified driver could hope for. Sanders spent 3 nights at the Humboldt Speedway in Humboldt, Kansas for the United States Modified Touring Series "King of America IV". Sanders won the $1,000 preliminary event on night 2 of the three-day show and topped it off by winning the 100 lap, $10,000 to win finale on Saturday night. Sanders, who had been running second for most of the race, was the benefactor of race-leader Jordan Grabouski getting together with a lapped car with under 10 laps to go in the race.

Races to keep an eye on next weekend:
  • WoO Sprints at Calistoga (4-5/6)
  • WoO Late Models $20,000 to win at Farmer City (4-5/6)
  • Lucas Oil Late Models in Mississippi, Lousiana and Oklahoma
  • All Star Sprints at Attica (4-5/6)
  • Spring Nationals Late Models in North Carolina and Tennessee
  • Big Block Super Series at Orange County Fair Speedway
  • Carolina Clash at Fayetteville Motor Speedway

Previous 'TDN Driver of the Week' Winners
Week 3 (3/17-3/23): Kyle Strickler
Week 2 (3/10-3/16): Rico Abreu
Week 1 (3/3-3/9): Chris Madden

World of Outlaws Illini 100 Preview

What: World of Outlaw Late Model Series offers up it's first big money show of the 2014 campaign. This weekend brings the complete make up event which rained out earlier this month.

Where: Farmer City Raceway-Farmer City, Illiois

When: 2 day show with time trials and heats on Friday April 25 and consolations plus the "100" on Saturday April 26th.

At Stake: $20,000 to win

Track: Farmer City Raceway is a 1/4 mile, fairly wide surface that can be abrasive to tires and is not always forgiving of bad decisions. The flag stand is in the infield, and the seating is unique.

Who's in the house?:

In addition to the WoO regulars, probably at least these drivers: Shannon Babb, Billy Moyer, Brian Birkhofer, Ryan Unzicker, Jason Feger, Brian Shirley, Jimmy Mars, Brady Smith, and other notables within 500 miles. The Lucas Oil Series will be in action at Hagerstown and Roaring Knob as well this coming weekend, so any of those tour regs who've participated in years past won't be in the running in 2014.

Media:

Will be available with free audio at dirtvision.com. Follow along on twitter via @WoOLateModels  OR you can follow race chaser/updater extraordinaire Patrick Davis who gives some of the best updates in the country! @pdavis18491988  Be sure to follow him if you're not doing so already!

Weather: Check out our companion weather site, run by fellow contributor to the DIRT Network, Penn State Weather Graduate Trever Steele's Raceway Weather here: http://rdwx.blogspot.com/ He'll have the weather eye open all week!

Previous Winners:

2008: Billy Moyer
2009: Shane Clanton
2010: Billy Moyer
2011: Rain
2012: Jimmy Mars
2013: Billy Moyer

What to Expect:

In 2013 Jason Feger won, and then lost. In an unprecedented circumstance for both driver and the race itself, Feger was disqualified for chemically altered tires. He'll be looking for something to prove heading into this year's contest.

But he'll have company. Including Billy Moyer who's won this event before in the past, and the always tough Babb who's still in search of the elusive win.

This weekend also serves as a proper debut of Rick Eckert in the Rocket house car. Eckert was penciled in to replace Brandon Sheppard, who originally replaced Josh Richards who's currently out of action. (We have no idea what the circumstances are any better than anybody else but hope Josh can return as soon as he is able).

One driver that can't be overlooked is the 17 year old standout Bobby Pierce. He's been the hottest driver in the Midwest the last several weeks. The eyes of the late model world have been on him lately, and they'll be paying even closer attention this weekend. It's hard to call him a dark horse here too. He stands as much a chance of winning as any other driver you can think of.

Meanwhile, Darrell Lanigan will keep his Club 29 entry at the forefront of the pack. Lanigan's quietly been going about his business this season, collecting wins and keeping atop the World of Outlaw standings. This could be his first big victory of the 2014 season.

Other than the aforementioned drivers, Mars and Brady Smith always have decent chances at the podium. Smith, who was one of the hottest super late model drivers in Florida this past February, should be there and should be in the top 5, he'll need some luck, but could easily win this.

Bold Predictions:

1.  Pierce takes home a top 5 finish unless a wreck or mechanical gremlins dictate otherwise.
2.  Shane Clanton gets a podium finish
3.  When the dust settles...Babb collects his first Illini 100 win

Rainouts in the Eyes of a Dirt Track Fan

It's simple: as a fan of dirt track racing, there are basically zero reasons why we should be thankful for a total weekend rainout. From the way the season has gone thus far for most of the country, I'd say just about everyone is downright sick of them. The way we look at it, rainouts can be categorized into 4 different levels.

Category 1 - Manageable: Manageable rainouts are when a shower pops up on our favorite local track. The initial thought? "Dang, I really wanted to see racing here tonight." Even though you can't see racing at your home track, you can take a trip down the road and catch some racing at another venue in your area.

Category 2 - Inconvenient: We classify inconvenient rainouts as the flash rains that all tracks in your local area fall victim too. Of course, you can always travel a couple hours either direction to another regional show provided that you're willing to spend the added time and gas. Regardless of how you look at it, Category 2 rainouts are annoying for all those affected by it.

Category 3 - Pain in the Ass: Pain in the ass rainouts, we all experience them at least a few times every season. We see the inevitable rains coming to our region in the days leading up to the weekend. While it's still a shame that we can't spend our Friday/Saturday/Sunday night where we want to be, at the race track of course, at least we never got our hopes up that the races might get in. And hey, at least you can still follow along with races from all over the country using Facebook, Twitter, Race-Monitor, etc.

Category 4 - Detrimental: Detrimental rainouts...where to begin? A detrimental rainout is the worst of them all. When seemingly all races locally, regionally and nationwide get cancelled due to rain. Just like a category 3, fans usually know what the weather will be like in their area before the weekend. So at least we know not to get our hopes up again to see some racing. But we did have our hopes up to follow other prominent events across the country and now that is not going to happen. When we are experiencing a category 4, not even Facebook, Twitter, Race-Monitor or any other media outlet can ease our pain.

Strickler Earns $10K and Driver of the Week Honors; Larson, Zeigler, and Heimbach Get Honorable Mention

Kyle Strickler won the $10K Renegades of Dirt show at County Line Raceway on March 22nd

Kyle Strickler earned TDN Driver of the Week honors when he crossed under the checkers at County Line Raceway on Saturday night to win the Renegades of Dirt sanctioned "North Carolina Modified Nationals". The $10,000 winner's check bolstered what has already been a great season for the
Mooresville, NC native which was, to the best of my knowledge, his 3rd victory of the season. Other wins on the season for Strickler included $1,000 feats at East Bay Raceway Park and Volusia Speedway Park.

Link to full press release

HONORABLE MENTIONS:

Kyle Larson:
The 21 year old sensation has proven that he can drive anything. After mastering almost every type of open-wheel dirt car, Larson made the move to asphalt last season. Kyle Larson receives an honorable mention for achieving his 1st career Nascar Nationwide Series win a career-best runner up finish in today's Nascar Sprint Cup Series race at Auto Club Speedway in his home state of California. **Note: The lack of dirt automatically disqualified Larson from receiving top honors.

Mason Zeigler:
The up and coming star in the late model ranks outran Mid-Atlantic veteran Jason Covert during Saturday night's feature at the famed Hagerstown Speedway (a.k.a. the Dirt Capitol of the World). It
was Zeigler's first career win at the speedway.

Blane Heimbach:
Heimbach etched his name in stone last season when he garnered his 1st career track championship at the Port Royal Speedway in Port Royal, PA. Although Blane has a history of struggling in recent years when he leaves his home track, he was able to capture the $4,000 lid-lifter at Selinsgrove Speedway for
his first career win at the track.

True Outlaws find home in NDRL

Ah, the true outlaws! You know the ones. The guys that can pick off races left and right at their own choosing. The guys that run selective schedules, running where the big money is and carefully constructing plans to not let it bog down their finances travelling to tracks where the odds of winning versus the costs are more tilted in their favor.

There's a lot to be said for picking and choosing where to run and how often in this day and age. It's the driver's money on the line and sponsor obligations as well. And, if a driver elects to use their resources in a wise fashion, which includes the decision to not chase races 20 hours away for the standard $10,000 purse, more power too them.

But, there's also times when it makes sense to chase. When the dates are lower in number, more geographically friendly, and the purses are worth the while it can tempt drivers who had thought their days of running a series were for the most part over.

For 2 and a half drivers, the NDRL made sense, and we're hoping the 1/2 driver, Chris Madden in this case, makes the choice to jump in with both feet in the coming weeks, the choice was made easier via a series that made sense for them.

Billy Moyer, Scott Bloomquist, and the aforementioned Madden appear to be taking a break, from taking a break from tours in 2014.

Moyer, the first "King of DIRT', NDRL Champion in 2013, though the series only ran five events in it's maiden voyage, was the first to step forward with his declaration at the end of last season. The multi time World of Outlaw champion will attempt to repeat in 2014 over the course of the longer schedule this year. There's no doubt he can do it too, and at the same time he'll still be able to pick and choose races on weekends where it makes sense.

Chris Madden, winner of the inaugural TDN Driver of the Week award, has been hotter than sunburn to start the season, collecting 3 five figure paydays in the season's first few weeks. We're not going to calculate his winning percentage for you, but we wouldn't be surprised if it was around 60% of all races he's run so far. Madden had been running big shows in the mid and deep south for years, winning regional points championships and at the same time appearing in many of the crown jewel events at Eldora and other familiar places. But in 2014 he could conceivably find a home in the NDRL. We're not sure at this time whether he's made the decision to run the full series, but with a series point lead early on and two wins in the first four races, it would almost seem like an opportunity too good to pass up.

Recently, DirtCast.Com's David Seay caught up with him where he gave a hint to his thought's on the matter.

"Well, that's a big question that laying on me right now, we'll just have to see how it goes," Madden said. "They really put out a great schedule that seems to fit well for everybody and they've got some great race cars following that deal (NDRL). It could turn out to be a really good deal for everyone. It's got to be as beneficial for us to come as much as it is for them to have us there."

Scott Bloomquist declared his intentions earlier on in March. The multi time World of Outlaw and Lucas Oil Series champion had put himself back in the true outlaw mode after dropping off said Lucas tour last season. In another Dave Seay interview, Bloomquist pointed to the convenience and flexibility of the tour's schedule.

"After really looking at it, when I heard they had about 30 races and 14 tracks it just made sense," Bloomquist said.  "The travelling is going to be less. Putting in two shows at the same track is obviously a lot better for us, it's a lot less expense. I think it's a good program and with the way they're doing it, they're not trying to kill everybody."

For the fans, all three of these guys joining, or potentially joining the action will be a glorious occasion. It means that fans in part of the country that never got to enjoy seeing Madden race, or haven't seen Bloomquist or Moyer in a tour race in years will get that opportunity. And at the same time, those drivers can enjoy going to different tracks where they haven't been in years or ever. Learning things about their chassis and engine programs along the way and opening up more merchandising revenue will be a welcome thing for them in the coming season.

It's a win-win for drivers and fans as far as we can see, and it's helping to break up the monotony of one racing season after another. After 2014, fans in many places will be able to trade stories of this year for years to come. "Remember that one night Moyer, Bloomquist and Madden all came up here?" That'll be the start of many bleacher story memories for years to come we're betting, and it's a good thing.

Outlaw Sprints by the Numbers

By Tyler Beichner:

Man...am I the only one that feels like Florida Speedweeks was just yesterday? Look at the calendar and you'll see that it was exactly one month ago that the World of Outlaws Sprint Car series finished up their three night onslaught of Volusia Speedway Park.

We are now already 8 races into the young season and it has been an intriguing one to say the least. I know you're all hardcore dirt fans, and you see every result of the Greatest Show on Dirt, so I'm not going to bog you down with redundant results that you can find anywhere on the web.

I'll begin with saying that I love crunching numbers, seeing the subtle differences between the drivers, and realizing what categories reflect into wins or being consistently up front. So before I begin I want to apologize ahead of time if these numbers bore you to death....my intent is that at least one of you fine Dirt Fanatics will find interest in the statistics that I'm going to present.

As always with my articles, I encourage you to leave your comments below. All thoughts are welcome - Did you enjoy this article? Find it interesting? Have a suggestion? Comment? Well let us know!

Super DIRTcar Series Will Offer More Competition in 2014- SDS Season Preview

Overview: "It's just a deeper pool of talent in 2014"

The 2014 Super DIRTcar Series is primed to one of the more exciting ones in recent memory. Fueled by new home tracks coming on board, more races, and more top level competitors that now have more reasons to race the whole tour or at least more races, the series has  been brought  to a new level of anticipation that it hasn't seen in years.

What does it really mean? Well, it pretty much means that what used to be a win, might now be a top 5, and so on. Whoever comes out on top in 2014 will have to be consistent against more drivers that area more capable of jamming the top of the results. To be sure, we'll still see the odd wins by the non tour drivers that open our eyes, we'll probably just see less of them. We'll still see some familiar names in the top 5, but they'll be having to race harder to get there.

In other words, Matt Sheppard and Brett Hearn will not be running away from the pack over the course of a 16 race schedule. They'll have to be better than several top shelf drivers that haven't run the tour in some time, and a pack of young guns that are getting better all the time over the course of 22 races.

Unlike the other major sanctions of dirt racing, for those new to it or who didn't know, the SDS Modified tour is a mix of not only tour finishes, but home track results as well. Though the effect of home track points is kind of exaggerated among many people, the additional points earned for weekly racing can and most likely will make a difference in the standings. It does pay to win your weekly track championship, and it might just be the points that put a driver over the top at year's end.

Home Tracks:

We won't be able to tell you who's running where weekly in 2014. Not at this time anyway because things can still change with a month before some of the weekly tracks start revving up. We'll do our best to compile a list for everyone later on in April when that picture starts to become clear. Right now all that exists are intentions and a few good bets based on history.

But as of right now, here's a link to the current list of DIRTcar Home tracks in 2014:

DIRTCar Sanctioned weekly tracks in 2014

The list doesn't include a few who will be DIRTcar sanctioned in 2014 that will not be hosting an SDS tour event such as Lernerville, Sharon and Brewerton. And a few of these on the list are 358 modified tracks as well. We'll have the complete full list with weekly competitors posted later on in April.

2014 Schedule:

For the most part, the series takes place in all the old familiar places in 2014. But, the newly purchased and re-opened Weedsport Speedway (without that annoying concert stage) makes it's return to the SDS schedule as well as tour stops at Fonda and Fulton Speedways which haven't seen tour action in a while.  Glen Ridge and Big Diamond also make an appearance in 2014, and the Alex Friesen Memorial at Ransomville makes it's way back onto the series this year, replacing the I-96 races of the past two seasons.

Bold Predictions:

2014 Final Standings:

This is a hard year to peg. Especially in mid March. But what's life without taking a few chances? Don't bet the farm or your kid's college fund on these. What we have here is the best guess at this time, for entertainment purposes only! Before we start though we'd like to add a Friesen disclaimer. At this time Stew Friesen is probably not doing the full tour for a number of reasons. This could change though. and if it does let it be said here that the top 5 as predicted would be jumbled to say the least.

1. Matt Sheppard- New team and new car (Troyer) will help him get back on top in 2014. It could fall by the wayside though if he succumbs to any prolonged slump. There's simply too much competition to pull yourself out of it against.

2. Billy Decker- Could and will challenge for championship, Sheppard will have to get wins when he's in position to stay ahead of him.

3. Brett Hearn- Probably primed for a tiny step back (don't bash me Hearn fans, he's probably due). Hearn will still get on top of the podium a couple of times and be a major factor as always.

4. Justin Haers- This is a reach, but he's got the goods. He'll need everything to go just right. It was only one track and a couple of races at Volusia, but he acquitted himself VERY well and looks to be ready for a breakout season.

5. Jimmy Phelps-Not to be captain obvious, but if luck goes his way he could finish in the top 3 with an outside chance of a title. Is this the year he takes Syracuse?

6. Peter Britten- Another reach, but he's more experienced on the big tracks and more than that probably starving for the results he's been working for the last three years. Look for his first SDS win this year.

7. Billy Dunn- Surprise Syracuse winner may take a step back before taking major steps forward in the coming years.

8. Dale Planck- Had a really good 2013 and a top 5 finish. We're not saying he's not good enough to get back into that area here, but with more competition in the mix, it'll be harder perhaps.

9. Gary Tomkins- Overcoming obstacles for years, and still ends up in the top 10 year after year. We'd love to see him get the financial support he deserves. He was in the mix for a win or two in a few races last year and will continue to do so in 2014. If he can make it happen, it would probably be the most popular win in recent SDS memory

10. (tie) Danny Johnson and Rich Scagliotta wind up in a tie for 10th place. We're hoping to see the Doctor at all tour events in 2014. It just wouldn't seem right without him. Scagliotta has more top 5's this year and even though he finished 10th in 2013, this would be a much tougher task in 2014.

Crown Jewels:

Big Show: Matt Sheppard takes home the large payday
Syracuse: Stew Friesen wins another 200, this time he keeps all $50,000
Charlotte: Decker and Britten split the year end shows at the World Finals

Abreu's First WoO Win Earns Him Driver of the Week Award

Rico Abreu's strong season already includes 4 wins in sprint car action
Rico Abreu notched his first career win with the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series last night as he dominated the feature at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., making him the deserving recipient of this week's TDN Driver of the Week Award. Abreu, who ran a remarkable race from his 3rd starting spot, passed Terry McCarl for the lead on lap 8 with an aggressive slide job in turns 1 & 2 and continued on to lead the remainder of the 35-lap event for the win.

The Saint Helena, CA. driver was also impressive on night one of the WoO at Tulare double-header when he climbed 9 positions during the feature to post an 11th place finish. Rico and crew-chief Paul Silva have clearly figured something out and will be a deadly force at every track that they make an appearance at.

Honorable Mentions:
Logan Schuchart receives the first honorable mention for this edition of our Driver of the Week award after his impressive runs at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif. the past two nights with the WoO Sprints, including a runner-up finish on night two. The young driver from Hanover, PA is in his maiden voyage with the World of Outlaws and needed these runs to overcome a rough start to his 2014 campaign.

Adam Wilt also receives an honorable mention for his bold win yesterday at the Lincoln Speedway in Abbottstown, PA. Wilt has now won the $3,500 season opening Icebreaker 30 two of the past three seasons. What makes this win so impressive is that it was his first race under well-respected crew chief Lee Stauffer. This could be a sign of big things to come from Adam Wilt and his Wide Open Motorsports team.

Please remember that your comments and suggestions are much appreciated. If you feel that another driver deserves the award, we missed a race to spotlight for the coming week or just have general feedback that you'd like to give, please feel free to leave a note for us at the bottom of the page.

SPOTLIGHT: Here's a quick look at a few of the races that could play a deciding role in who receives our Driver of the Week award after next weekend.
  • ASCS National race at Devil's Bowl Speedway
  • WoO Sprints at Stockton 99 Dirt Track
  • Lucas Oil Late Model's "Indiana Icebreaker" at Brownstown Speedway
  • Renegades of Dirt Modifieds at County Line Raceway
  • Southern All Stars Late Models at Cleveland Speedway
  • Port Royal Speedway opener

Week One: Chris Madden (March 9th)

Madden Claims Inaugural TDN Driver of the Week Award

Chris Madden celebrates in NDRL victory lane after his Tennessee Tipoff feature win.

This past weekend Gray Court, South Carolina's own Chris "Smokey" Madden trumped the field at The NDRL's Tennessee Tipoff event at Smoky Mountain Speedway in Maryville, TN. Madden has been on a tear this year and there's no question that right now he is the hottest driver on dirt.

Prior to Madden's $12,500 feat this past weekend, he had already collected two national touring series wins in a LOLMDS race at Golden Isles Speedway on February 7th and his first career National Dirt Racing League triumph at East Alabama Motor Speedway, worth $10,000 and $17,017 respectively. Chances are that Chris Madden is the happiest man on the racing circuit and the only person/entity that may be happier about his accomplishments are the government ($$$).

If you've made it this far into the article, you've obviously read it and have somewhat enjoyed it as well. Feel free to leave your opinions on whether you agree, disagree, or have suggestions that could improve this piece at the bottom of the page. Engagement is healthy and encouraged.

Here are the races to keep an eye on this coming weekend that could determine who will garner next week's award:

  • WoO Sprints at Tulare (Fri. March 14th, Sat. March 15th)
  • Carolina Clash- Skyler Trull Memorial at Carolina Speedway (Fri. March 14th, Sat. March 15th)
  • ASCS National race at Arizona Speedway (Fri. March 14th, Sat. March 15th)
  • Icebreaker 30 at Lincoln Speedway for 410 sprints (Sat. March 15th, if we're lucky)
  • $10,000 to win SLM race at Ark-La-Tex Speedway (Fri. Match 14th, Sat. March 15th)

After a Very Notable 2013, Henry is looking for an opportunity in 2014

Cap Henry is coming off a memorable racing season in 2013. He was able to make his first Knoxville Nationals Saturday night main event and found victory lane a couple times as well. Last month he ran in Australia where he was very competitive. For 2014 in the US though, the young racer is looking for help to continue building on his racing career.

Henry spent two weeks racing down under for Dave and Jen Whell in their Toowoomba Car Wreckers sprinter. They were able to finish second in their first night out and picked up a couple more top ten finishes in his time there. Henry really enjoyed the experience.

“Dave and Jen Whell were great friends and people to drive for,” Henry said. “The racing was really good, every night we kept getting the car better.”

In the US the CHR 54 Sprint Car team has been a regular on the All Stars tour for the past four seasons. The team finished fourth in National Series points last year. This year the team will not be following the series and due to financial restrictions will not be racing much this season.

Anyone that has been around racing knows how tough it is financially,” Henry said. “I have great product sponsors that make it a lot easier, but it's still hard to do it without some money backing. We will only get the 54 car out for a few shows this year, but we are working on things for next year. I've talked to a few teams about this year, but unfortunately nothing has come about yet.

Those product sponsors include FK Rod Ends, K&N Air Filters, Champion Oil, OC Shocks, Simpson, TSR, Keizer Wheels, GME, Wings Unlimited, Maxim, GME, Kistler Engines and Racing Products.

With the 54 team taking some time off this year Henry has had to part ways with two guys he was been friends with and on the road with for the past few years.

“AJ Havens and Andrew Barman were my long time crew guys, but this year they are both doing different things since my car isn't being raced full time,” Henry said. “AJ was a big influence on my career, he's been with me on and off for every year I've done the All Stars, and taught me a lot over the years.

Henry was able to pick up two wins last season. One of his wins came at Fremont Speedway and it was a special one for the Bellevue, Ohio racer and for Havens.

“It was pretty special, as the day we won was my crew chief's uncle, John Wisbon’s, birthday and he passed away a few years ago,” Henry said. “You don't get opportunities for special wins like that very often, and even rarer do you get to capitalize on the moments. I had to run a really hard non-stop race, but to be able to do it for my crew chief and their family was a great feeling.”

The other win came at Lernerville Speedway when he was able to pass Danny Holtgraver on the final lap of the race.

Another special part of last season was the Knoxville Nationals. The team used the Friday night qualifier to their advantage. Henry started fourth, but fell back to sixth and out of a spot that would put him in Saturday’s main event. The 23 year old battled back into the top four and was able to make some late race passes to finish second and secured one of the four guaranteed starting spots available for Saturday night’s main event.

“It was a very satisfied feeling to run that good,” Henry said. “AJ and I always kind of clicked at Knoxville, but always had mechanical failures that never let us show our true potential there.

Henry Getting Around the Bottom Lane at Knoxville.
Henry started 18th in Saturday’s main event and was able to move up through the field in the 50 lap race to finish 10th.

“There is nothing like the four-wide lap at Knoxville,” Henry said. “We had a pretty good car, I just sat back and rode for awhile to keep from burning the tires off, but to run top 10 in my first nationals was awesome.”

While 2013 had some high moments, 2014 currently has uncertainty and adversity. The 54 team has been through some tough times before. One of their toughest moments came in 2011 on their way home after a night of racing at the KC Raceway when their hauler was involved in an unfortunate accident.

“That was a crazy night,” Henry said. “A drunk driver crossed the median and hit my semi, flipping the cab into the ditch and spinning the trailer sideways across the road. One crew member, Greg K, broke his neck, my dad tore his rotator cuffs, and Andrew B had to get some staples in his head. It totaled the truck and trailer.

The racing community as it does so well stepped up to help the CHR team through that difficult time.

“An injured drivers fund helped Greg K with his medical bills,” Henry said. “Tony Stewart Racing and Jessica Zemken let me run her spare car for three races to keep my points going with the All Stars, CH Motorsports also loaned me a set of wings and Danny Holtgraver let me borrow a radiator. Everyone was really supportive, it showed how the racing community always comes together to help.

The team did not miss a single race on the All Stars tour after the accident.

With the talent and perseverance Henry has, don’t expect it to be too long before someone gets him in a car for 2014.

World of Outlaws Sprint Cars Primed for Strong 2014 Season

The premier dirt series in the world is already 3 races into their 37th consecutive season and it looks to be as promising as the previous 36 years. Early on in the season we find 16 drivers following the World of Outlaws tour.

What is also astounding this year is the number of headlines surrounding the series that we will be following. How will Steve Kinser do in his farewell tour? Can Donny Schatz reclaim the top spot from reigning champ Daryn Pittman? Will Paul McMahan continue the rise of CJB Motorsports recent success. Those story lines among many others are what I will be focusing on this season.

Many have been questioning for years how the Outlaws will survive after legendary drivers Steve Kinser and Sammy Swindell make their last rounds. We already know that this is Kinser's last full season on the tour, and as much as I hate to say it Sammy Swindell doesn't have much left in the tank. And yet, it looks like the next couple years will be as bright and promising as anyone could have ever imagined. Donny Schatz and Daryn Pittman have already taken over as the leaders of the series with many more drivers to follow.

Amidst the loss of veteran drivers Craig Dollansky and Chad Kemenah, the World of Outlaws have gained the likes of Tim Kaeding, Brad Sweet, Logan Schuchart, Jacob Allen and one driver yet to named. On top of that we know Shane Stewart will be joining the tour in 2015. Needless to say, the Outlaws will not be hurting for drivers in the foreseeable future.

Here are the the drivers that are planning to follow the full tour in 2014:

Jacob Allen - Hanover, PA - 0 career WoO wins

Cody Darrah - Red Lion, PA - 5 career WoO wins

Tim Kaeding - San Jose, CA - 19 career WoO wins

Kraig Kinser - Bloomington, IN - 15 career WoO wins

Steve Kinser - Bloomington, IN - 577 career WoO wins

Kerry Madsen - St. Mary's, NSW, AUS - 10 career WoO wins

Paul McMahan - Elk Grove, CA - 18 career WoO wins

Daryn Pittman - Owasso, OK - 38 career WoO wins

Bill Rose - Plainfield, IN - 0 career WoO wins

Joey Saldana - Brownsburg, IN - 84 career WoO wins

Donny Schatz - Fargo, ND - 148 career WoO wins

Logan Schuchart - Hanover, PA - 0 career WoO wins

Jason Sides - Bartlett, TN - 13 career WoO wins

Brad Sweet - Grass Valley, CA - 3 career WoO wins

Sammy Swindell - Germantown, TN - 292 career WoO wins

???????? - Driver TBA

The Schedule

Over 90 race dates are on tap for the World of Outlaws STP Sprint Car Series in 2014. Ninety-one races to be exact.

Forty different drivers competed in their first three events at Volusia Speedway Park as a part of Florida Speedweeks. Brad Sweet, Donny Schatz and Steve Kinser were fortunate enough to pick up the wins in Florida. Paul McMahan and Daryn Pittman left the sunshine state with a tie for the points lead.

From there they will head west for their annual western swing. That kicks off with two events at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas followed by a show at Tucson International Raceway. The remainder of the month and a half swing will include visits to Thunderbowl Raceway, Stockton 99 Dirt Track, Merced Speedway, Silver Dollar Speedway, Calistoga Speedway, Kings Speedway and Perris Auto Speedway.

From there they will head back to three different tracks in the midwest before they make their first east coast swing in May. Following the east coast the Outlaws will head to 10 different tracks before they the embark on the "Month of Money".

The "Month of Money" kicks off at Limaland Motorsports Park (July 9th) for the Brad Doty Classic. From there they head to Eldora Speedway for the Kings Royal and Lernerville Speedway for the Silver Cup twin-30's. For the first time they will stop at Lincoln Speedway before spending their weekend at Williams Grove for the Summer Nationals. After two stops in New York and Canada each, the Outlaws head to I-55 in Pevely, MO for the Ironman 55. The "Month of Money" will then culminate with the biggest event of the year, the Knoxville Nationals.

The Outlaws will then swing way out to the greater northwest area for a handful of races, take a trip to California for the Gold Cup, and head back east where they will ultimately finish their season at the World of Outlaws World Finals at The Dirt Track at Charlotte.
